More recently, Banner discovered he was dying of a degenerative disease and began to exhibit a new personality when transforming into the Hulk. This "Devil Hulk" claimed to be a pure evil version of Banner’s nature, using Banner’s debilitating condition to take control of the Hulk’s body. It was further revealed by Doc Samson that Banner’s psyche is fragmented into thousands of personalities, some more dominant than others are. Samson had lied when creating the so-called "merged Hulk," using an idealized version of Banner’s self instead of truly merging separate personalities.Tales to Astonish#97–101, Incredible Hulk vol. 2#102–117, Annual#1 and material from Not Brand Echh#9 Hulk (vol. 2) #1-24, King-Size Hulk #1, Fall of the Hulks: Gamma, Hulk-Sized Mini-Hulks #1, and material from Incredible Hulk #600, Wolverine (vol. 3) #50 Milgrom, Al( w),Milgrom, Al( p),Janke, Dennis( i)."The Monster's Analyst" The Incredible Hulk,vol.2,no.221(September 1972).
