About this deal

The singles and EPs listed here, in the main, are all of those that went on general release in the UK. Live this should be a real stunner and could easily take you into something else thats guitar powered such as ‘Brainstorm’ or ‘Master of the Universe’. At the beginning of 1980, Dave Brock started collating material from his archives and issuing cassette tape albums under the imprint Weird Records. It appears that the introduction of multi-instrumentalist Tim ‘Thighpaulsandra’ Lewis has given a new energy to the band, and possibly Dave Brock’s song writing. Which, to certain extent, is just what they do, moving easily from ambient, space-noise-assisted soundscapes (the title track, which opens the album with over ten minutes of easy-on-the-ear Hawknoise) through more traditional, bare-bones proto punk ( The End, which, of course and unsurprisingly for such a singular band, comes near the start of the album), a spoken word sample on the death of Author Aldous Huxley to a sprawling, late night jazz odyssey ( They Are So Easily Distracted) in the space of the first four tracks.

You do need to be paying attention, as next up is ‘They Are So Easily Distracted’, another 10 minute opus that meanders along with piano, saxophone and synthesisers conjuring up magical sounds that are really enjoyable with a meaningful spoken finish. The numerous touring activities and live albums from the recent and distant past also continue to proliferate and to tweak an old adage, it seems you’re never more than six months from a Hawkwind release. Third track ‘Aldous Huxley’ takes us on a journey of exploration and whilst the musical backdrop is reassuring, the spoken word parts are deeper in content. You get the impression that it’s a track that could have no end; an improvised groove that could take off anywhere, gentle pulses decorated with squeaks and whines as an alternative the relentless pumping riffs. on top of who knows how many ‘live’ albums, there’s nothing here to suggest they’re running on empty just yet.

Dave has stated that this is a concept album of sorts, which strangely – although not for Hawkwind – appears to run backwards; The End is at the start of the album and The Beginning comes towards the end. The band’s 35th studio album is an outstanding progression to their varied and celebrated catalogue. Sounding in places more like Jean Michel Jarre than ‘Brainstorm’, its a dreamy theme setting piece, mystical and mesmerising in equal parts. Online since 2010 it is one of the fastest-growing and most respected music-related publications on the net. There’s some soaring guitar soloing to hold the whole piece together and then we are brought into ‘Outside Of Time’, a longer piece, with occasional spoken word and electronica spitting up the musical passages. It has long been a practice of theirs to incorporate live recordings (albeit with studio overdubs) of previously unreleased tracks on studio albums (for example Hall of the Mountain Grill), and studio recordings of previously unreleased tracks on live albums (for example Palace Springs). Eponymous title track 'The Future Never Waits' opens and reaffirms the fact the starship Hawkwind has long lurked outside the realms of mainstream acceptance. The one constant is Dave Brock, who has the uncanny knack of selecting the right band members for a given album or period of time.

Hawkwind – The Future Never Waits: Album Review

In fact, they maintain the interest level throughout, maybe partly due to the variety of the tracks. A band for whom the groove is key to their popularity, in 2023, they’ve shown that they’re not averse to slipping out now and again to see what’s over the parapet.Other tracks like ‘Rama (The Prophecy)’ and ‘I’m Learning To Live Today’ sit tightly in the Hawkwind groove, providing old and new fans alike with the intense and concentrated fusion of musical styles they’ve come to expect and celebrate. Legendary psychonaut cosmic rockers Hawkwind will release a brand-new studio album, their 35 th no less, entitled, The Future Never Waits due on vinyl and CD as of 28 th April via Cherry Red Records. Such is the way of social media and streaming; this is the best strategy to capitalizs on any audience.
