About this deal

He is worried that he may be facilitating crimes which he cannot tell his superiors, but he does continue. Elena Serenko, having been recently engaged, decides to resign from her job and begin a fresh chapter in Australia. Although I didn't like the main character, Chris Sketty, very much, I still found myself rooting for him. My bad hip has become stiff from being sat down for the past ten minutes while we did the various small talk. We are transported back through his career, from first going undercover to being wounded in a gun fight and then recognised as a hero.

How the book is mostly narrated by the main character Chris Sketty reminded me of a 1940'2 film noir. Kernick proves, once again, that he can take you for a wild ride, and doing so very creatively and intelligently. The typical British police procedural can be a bit staid, perhaps a little too trusting of the inherent honesty of British policing, but there are no rose tinted spectacles here. Once again, the author has showed why his books are so great and high praised because this one is definitely a must read. Apart from the hunt for Roman and Sketty’s story this novel has a strong feel of London and the gang culture in the city. An experienced hired assassin is on the verge of finding someone who he has evaded him for the longest timer.

But Dr Ralph Teller, a wealthy industrialist who lost his wife in the attack, never gave up hope of justice. But unbeknownst to her is the fact that the killer not only knows who she is, but has also tracked her down.Simon Kernick is somewhat of a master when it comes to twisty endings, and he definitely delivered here in spades. Mr Kernick started off his thrillers with the excellent Business of Dying featuring a policeman who is also an assassin and this kind of hits that same spot, someone trying to cope with secrets and changing circumstances.

Reineke wanted Sketty to infiltrate the CTC's Intelligence Unit and keep an eye on Sergeant Barry Cleaver, whom Reineke suspected had links to an arms dealer who was supplying the weapons. Dr Ralph Teller is in his 70s, MS has confined him to a wheelchair, but grief has driven him to investigate the night of his wife’s death.

Years later when people from his past and a journalist try to uncover what actually happened Sketty finds himself in danger and so do those around him. Overall, this is a cracking read with a gritty storyline, excellent dialogue, believable characters and a plot that keeps you gripped to the end. Devastated by the vicious nature of the killing, will Milne avoid being captured for his own crimes while also solve a murder so brutal? Sketty’s well rehearsed story is interrupted by someone who knows a lot more than the accepted version of events. Battling through numerous twists and an explosive ending, and not knowing who he can trust, Chris, a man with a limp and a destroyed life, is now on a mission to reveal the truth, whatever the cost.

Emerging with his lawyer, Henry reveals to DI Ray Mason that he knows that happened to Kitty, and the person who murdered her. The story twists and turns, and every time we think we’ve nailed Sketty’s character we have to think again as the layers of the story peel away.

Throughout the second half of the novel we always seem to be on the verge of yet another shocking and possible fatal revelation.
