About this deal

The a7 IV gains the ability to capture 10-bit compressed images, rather than just the 8-bit JPEGs historically offered. Unlike Canon, which only uses HEIF capture for HDR images, the Sony lets you shoot standard DR images in 10-bit, with a choice of 4:2:2 or 4:2:0 chroma sub-sampling, if you can find benefit to doing so. CIPA standards. Pitch/yaw shake only. Planar T* FE 50mm F1.4 ZA lens. Long exposure NR off. Still-image mode.

Battery life is, again, solid rather than spectacular. The official CIPA rating is 520 shots per charge (when using the electronic viewfinder). While that's actually a 15% drop from the Sony A7 III, we found that estimate to be a little conservative and it can shoot 4K video for around two hours. In our tests, it managed to shoot 4K/60p for two hours and 20 minutes with no overheating, and a few minutes longer in 4K/24p mode before the battery died. Sony A7 IV review: image and video quality Still, while the Canon EOS R6 is likely a better choice if you spend a lot of time holding down the shutter and shooting speeding objects, the A7 IV is still more than good enough for wildlife shooting. And the point is - this products are not essential, compared to the smartphones or petrol for example! With a refined design, the Alpha 7 IV includes a fast and clear 3.69M dots electronic viewfinder, a new 3'' vari-angle touchscreen monitor and a 5 axis In-Body Image Stabilisation (IBIS) system for a comfortable and stable shooting experience. With the inclusion of Sony's intuitive new touch capable menu system, a dedicated Photo/Video/S&Q dial, and a dual card slot, switch seamlessly from photo and video and focus on your creativity. The a7 IV's breathing compensation mode is useful if you're primarily planning on shooting with high-end Sony lenses, meaning that your field of view won't shift as the lenses focus. Even when making extreme corrections on the likes of the 50mm F1.2, the impact of cropping and rescaling the footage isn't obvious. The a7 IV is capable of excellent image quality, and its constant Bluetooth connection makes it easy to transfer images from the camera to your smartphone if you're away from your computer. JPM29, That doesn't help answer the original question. A nicer screen would still be nicer, even if not *strictly* necessary. But there's plenty of things you could point to on a high end camera that aren't strictly necessary, but have been included because some customers want. Still images: 1/8000 to 30 s, Bulb, Movies: 1/8000 to 1/4 (1/3 steps), up to 1/50 in AUTO mode (up to 1/25 in Auto slow shutter mode) If you come to this camera from another Sony model, you will find its settings and controls a logical extension of what you know already, and its performance and capabilities an absolute revelation.

The Focus Map function cannot be used in the following conditions: When shooting stills, when the Focus Magnifier function is in use, when using digital zoom, during USB streaming, when no lens is mounted, when an A-mount lens is mounted, or when using the SEL16F28. For other lenses, please use the latest firmware. The downside of this added flexibility is that you need to engage HEIF capture before you can engage the Hybrid Log Gamma (HLG) color/gamma mode, rather than having both settings change to match one another. It's worth trying, though: images shot in HLG can show much more of the camera's dynamic range to give a much more lifelike version of your image if viewed with an HDR-capable TV. However, despite the name, the active mode doesn't do especially well if you try to move while the camera is recording. The a7 IV records its gyro sensor readings alongside the footage, letting you apply post-shot correction using Sony's Catalyst software, letting you apply more stabilization in exchange for a more substantial crop, but we've found this to be quite a time-consuming process, that we'd probably only use in extremis. Video Summary As always, these figures are more useful for comparing cameras, rather than getting an idea of exactly how many shots you'll get (in our experience, getting double the rated number isn't unusual with a new battery). We tend to find a rating of over 500 shots per charge means not really having to worry about battery life in anything but the most intensive pro sports or wedding shoots. In addition, even with subjects the camera hasn't been trained to recognize, the a7 IV uses pattern detection, subject color and brightness to help it stay focused on the subject you selected. Just because you took the question personally and you felt threatened when I broached the subject doesn't mean it was nonsense. It just means that you are emotionally invested in Sony as a camera maker and you had a knee-jerk reaction to a perceived slight. I have nothing against Sony, and I own a lot of Sony equipment, and I was not trying to smear them.
