About this deal

I'm still pleased when my request was approved because even after I started reading it, I was intrigued though after I finished it, I can firmly say this book belongs in the YA category.

Michael is a character with a troubled past, he has a ‘behaviour plan’ as he has been known to punch students and teachers, ‘flip desks’ as he frequently tells us and ‘gets full’ of all the feelings he can’t control. However, a popular girl who lives next door to him is open to making friends with him and he is able to show that beneath the naughty boy image there is a depth of character and warmth to him. What I really appreciated here was the realistic ideas he has of his own limitations, although perhaps rather negative, he seems to be aware that he might not be the most attractive prospect to a teenage girl and rather than being upset about it is able to deal with it and rationalise it. His relationship with his siblings though impresses her as well as his ability to open up to her, and he confesses how he now sees his mother.Somewhere inside her, Coraline could feel a huge sob welling up. And then she stopped it, before it came out. She took a deep breath and let it go." This was a heavy read, especially for YA. The themes (suicide, bullying, depression and mental health issues) are not for the faint of heart, and I'm not 14 years old anymore and I still found certain chapters and scenes hard to read, mostly because the author writes with such compassion, emotion and sentiment.

The Other Mother by Matthew Dicks | Goodreads

I don't have enough words to express how much I liked this book. The only time I put it down was to work and to sleep.

To make things worse, Michael wakes up one morning and goes downstairs to find that his mother has been replaced by a copy. A dupe. Carol Goodman's The Other Mother is a psychological thriller that explores the difficulties of two new mothers, Laurel and Daphne, who meet at a mother-baby group. So I was just reading along, enjoying this story of two women who both recently had a baby girl, and both named them Chloe, when I realized that I completely didn't understand what was happening in this book. Man, was this hard to follow. And I really gave it my mostly full attention. Mrs. Jones – Coraline's mother. She is very busy most of the time, and sometimes a little inattentive, but she loves and cares about Coraline. Coraline considers her to be rather boring. Two women, Laurel and Daphne, with babies both named Chloe, meet in a support group for women suffering from postpartum depression. Their identities slowly merge and one is later found dead in her bathtub. One of them ends up at a mental hospital where she initially began work as an archivist and is later a patient claiming to be the one who is allegedly dead.

Outside, the world had become a formless, swirling mist with no shapes or shadows behind it, while the house itself seemed to have twisted and stretched. […] You can guess what books I prefer to read when I read the blurb and thought it had a supernatural/horror element to it.

The Sweet Ghost Girl Doll The Other Mother is a beautiful and emotional trip inside the heart and mind of a 14 year old boy who frankly has a lot going on. Michael's story sometimes seems extraordinary but then again when you really think about it, it's not so much. Does he have more on his plate than some kids? Absolutely. But his thoughts and feelings are just like pretty much any teenager. This one is all about postpartum psychosis, but there's more-- it's about identity (mistaken, stolen?), motherhood, trust, love, and so much more. What Goodman excels at here (and perhaps in all her writing) is her ability to create atmosphere. Imagine a milk-white sky, toss in an old stone home with a tower set on a hill overlooking a mental institution, add a mother and child and reclusive author. Got it? See what I mean... She wishes to trap Coraline in the parallel universe (the Other Mother’s world) and capture her soul (as she has captured other children’s souls). She controls everything in the universe and is used to things going her way. This is why she is unable to stand it when Coraline defies her. The Other Mother progressively becomes more deceptive and cunning throughout the novella. She does not hold up her side of the bargain with Coraline and attempts to cheat her way to Coraline’s soul. Ultimately, she is defeated by Coraline, and peace is restored to the universe. The Other Mother is played by Teri Hatcher in the movie Coraline.

Stand up comedian Jen Brister’s first novel focuses on her experience of entering motherhood with her partner, Chloe. Once Jen and Chloe have agreed that they would like to start a family, they begin making the hundreds of decisions every parent-to-be faces, with a few extras thrown in for being a gay couple. One of these decisions was that Chloe would undergo fertility treatment, and when their twins are conceived, Jen finds herself launched into the role of ‘the other mother’. Not the birth mother, not the biological mother, not the adoptive mother, but something other. The problem for me started with the audio book. One of the narrators I began to have a real issue with and her reading highlighted what became a sore spot for me in the text, which was specifically the dialogue. It began to lean into near melodrama at times, characters wearing their hearts on their sleeves, especially at emotionally charged moments which increased in frequency as the book progressed. Thank you to the author, Carol Goodman, the publisher, HarperCollins, and Edelweiss + for an advanced reader copy of The Other Mother. This DEFINITELY is a psychological thriller that at first had me second guessing why I was reading it, but then it all came together. Condition: Very Good. Very Good condition. Shows only minor signs of wear, and very minimal markings inside (if any). A number of other details arguably reinforce this theory, such as her parents suddenly changing, while some on Reddit have noted that the well resembles the tunnel to the other world and the garden in the real world eerily looks like the Beldam.
