About this deal

Tony: The curt, arrogant husband. Always showing off his earning and making sure others knew not to meddle with him. It should be a super fun turkey day for my tired, premenstrual ass. Eh, I don't like turkey much anyway.

Beth, too, I liked her but she was way too harsh on herself, but then aren't most of us? Marie, god she riled me and Sarah, I would have loved to have been there for her. Yes, it was kind of a sweet little family saga, but ultimately the plotting and characterisations were so un-nuanced, full of clichés and stereotypes that you could just see every twist coming a mile off, and nothing really convinced. And the writing itself was pretty basic. It is a bit mad but never strays into unbelievable and it is wildly entertaining with a great ending. The Dinner Party” (St. Martin’s Press), centers on matriarch Sylvia, who is alternately proud of, and frustrated by, her three high-achieving adult children: Gideon, Sarah and Becca. Although Sylvia has considerable wealth and status, she is desperate to impress the even wealthier, higher-status Rothschilds, whose son is newly dating Becca. We start off at a dinner party with a bunch of couples who are having a school reunion type of thing. One of the ladies, Evie, recommends them play a game of 'burn their deepest darkest secrets' which ends up with one of them dead. Family get-togethers are inherently dramatic as they are often accompanied by so much expectation, pent-up emotions and long-held grievances. They often start out with the best intentions but can spiral out of control into feuds. There's an intense familiarity yet often family members can feel like strangers to each other. This is something Sarah Gilmartin understands well as her debut novel begins and ends with a dinner to mark the anniversary of a death in the family. In between these dinners we learn about the history of the Gleesons, a contemporary Irish family of farmers with two sons and twin daughters. The story focuses on daughter Kate as she struggles to reconcile with family tragedies, emotionally connect with the family members who remain and progress forward in her own life. It's an engaging story with many moments of high tension and heartache because it's clear that these people care deeply about each other but also drive each other crazy. The couples have been taking turns in hosting monthly dinner parties and this has worked well, until one night when Chris introduces Simon to the mix. It brings out the best and the worst in the others and this is the start of a lot of changes for all of them.

The Dinner Party” by Mona Gardner - Plainview “The Dinner Party” by Mona Gardner - Plainview

In this satirical comedy, a handsome stranger inadvertently wreaks havoc in the lives of three couples. Sarah: The supermodel, the beauty who had it all – filthy rich husband, a loving daughter and huge ass home and dresses. They are a group of eight friends ... all married ... all have been friends for at least 10 years. Ted and Juliette are hosting a dinner party at their house. They are expecting a wonderful evening of fun, good food, laughter, great company, and wine. All of the characters were stereotyped into one-dimension. They were all walking-talking-acting in a way that said they didn’t know to be anything else. Seriously, it was almost to the point of ridiculousness, the way Chris ALWAYS talked about food and dips, Marie ALWAYS seemed to be thrusting her breasts onto other men and how Beth was ALWAYS the voice of reason, even though she was flawed character herself. Here’s all you need to know about the characters in case you don’t believe me: And they were jumbling, the images, the faces: Peter standing tall with his news of the future, and Ray pulling his chair closer, and then their mother, her mother, the metallic sheen of her eyes and the clawed hands of all that worry and hurt. Kate could see herself too, could see the four of them now sat around the table, existing in the same space together. Surviving. Really, she thought, they were all strange, troubled individuals but beside each other, they were very clearly a family. You could not call it anything else. It was all they had, and it might be enough. Then there's Simon the unexpected guest who is invited to the first dinner party by Chris due to his marital issues & his horrible wife Candice Ted rang Juliette, still nothing so he rang the babysitter asking if she heard from Juliette but no she’s heard nothing, and Juliette finally answers, she acted like she was at home but ted knew she wasn’t, so he gets up and leaves the station. The 6 have all known each other forever, have issues ( with themselves and each other ) and worries, foibles, stresses, quirks and things that irritate each other 😃😃

This story gives readers a very close-up and personal view of how unexpressed individual failings, desires, perceptions, and general boredom with routine can lead to a sudden, and sometimes irreparable rending of the group as a whole. I wasn't crazy about the majority of the characters. The only ones I liked were Simon, Chris (though he seemed overly obsessed about dips), Duncan and Issy (Duncan's assistant). I don't know how these three women stayed friends all these years because they were usually nasty and snippy with each other. Tony, Sarah's husband, was an arrogant controlling jerk and I don't know why Sarah stayed married to him. Bernadette needs to be the centre of attention; she needs to be not merely the best at everything whether it be scone baking or championing her daughter's horse-riding career, but to be KNOWN to be the best. She cannot stand to lose at anything, not an argument nor a tennis match. She can be cruel and vindictive, and often is. Challenge her at your peril. A copy of this book was kindly provided to me by Netgalley and Harper Impulse and Killer Reads in exchange for an honest review. Thank you! *** Ursella and Edmond Rothschild ( Henry’s parents): Down to earth people. Sylvia could take a lesson.

Securities and Financial Planning offered through LPL Financial, a Registered Investment Advisor, Member FINRA/ SIPC. It's about trust and dark secrets- it rests marriage to the limits- and none of them can begin to imagine it consequences. And a culminating family gathering one year later (Halloween 2019) with the three surviving siblings and their mother which results in many (literally) home truths being told. And as Simon becomes more involved with the group, his presence changes everything these three couples thought they knew about each other, leading to a final dinner party that no-one will ever forget. This novel is very much one of a nuclear Irish family dealing – dealing with the traumas that have occurred to them, the interactions between them both past and present, how childhood issues and words spoken play out for many years - the nuclear family term being I think particularly appropriate here in a book which explores both familial attraction and tension.
