Over the next several years, Nostradamus traveled throughout France and Italy, treating victims of the plague. There was no known remedy at the time; most doctors relied on potions made of mercury, the practice of bloodletting and dressing patients in garlic-soaked robes. Did he really see the future, or are we vainly trying to find meaning in someone’s puzzling ramblings? There are some reports that university officials discovered his previous experience as an apothecary and found this reason to expel him from school. Evidently the school took a dim view of anyone who was involved in what was considered a “manual trade.”

As the year comes to a close, it’s time to talk doomsday forecasts, my babies, and no one grips us with grim quite like Nostradamus. Pasteur was the great French biologist, microbiologist and chemist who was in fact pretty much the demigod due to how many lives he saved. It seems Nostradamus did mention Pasteur by name as the French reads “Sera Pasteur demi-Dieu honore.” The thing discovered may be the technique to obliterate bacteria by heating beverages and allowing them to cool, among other discoveries he made. But then it says after a while he will be desecrated, which Pasteur was, many years later in 1995. That was when Gerald Lynn Geison published his biography of Pasteur “The Private Science of Louis Pasteur” that leaves him in a less heroic light. Nostradamus began writing about his visions and incorporating them into his first almanac. He studied at the University of Avignon, but was forced to leave after just over a year when the university closed due to an outbreak of the plague. He worked as an apothecary for several years before entering the University of Montpellier, hoping to earn a doctorate, but was almost immediately expelled after his work as an apothecary (a manual trade forbidden by university statutes) was discovered. He first married in 1531, but his wife and two children died in 1534 during another plague outbreak. He fought alongside doctors against the plague before remarrying to Anne Ponsarde, with whom he had six children. He wrote an almanac for 1550 and, as a result of its success, continued writing them for future years as he began working as an astrologer for various wealthy patrons. Catherine de' Medici became one of his foremost supporters. His Les Prophéties, published in 1555, relied heavily on historical and literary precedent, and initially received mixed reception. He suffered from severe gout toward the end of his life, which eventually developed into edema. He died on 1 or 2 July 1566. Many popular authors have retold apocryphal legends about his life.

The Almanacs, by far the most popular of his works, [37] were published annually from 1550 until his death. He often published two or three in a year, entitled either Almanachs (detailed predictions), Prognostications or Presages (more generalised predictions). Nostradame’s grandfather, Guy Gassonet, had converted to Catholicism a half century earlier and changed the family name to Nostradame, in part to avoid persecution during the Inquisition. And the fact that Nostradamus was unable (or unwilling) to make exact predictions about precise dates means that his writings will be dismissed out of hand by many. The predictions do not follow chronological coherence and were written combining French, Greek, Latin and Occitan. It is believed that it contains anagrams, mythological and astrological references, in a subjective language that makes comprehension difficult. Some scholars claim that this was a resource used by Nostradamus to evade the Holy Inquisition, for fear of being persecuted for heresy. [4]However, most accounts state he was not expelled and received license to practice medicine in 1525. At this time, he Latinized his name—as was the custom of many medieval academics—from Nostradame to Nostradamus. The Plague Years There is good news and bad news. The good news is that, as you may have noticed, the world didn’t end on 4 July 1999. Hence the headline in the Guardian on Monday 5 July 1999: “Nostradamus wrong (please ignore if the world ended yesterday).” Anonymous letters to the Mercure de France in August and November 1724 drew specific public attention to the fact (Anonyme) Lettre critique sur la personne et sur les écrits de Michel Nostradamus, Mercure de France, août et novembre 1724. Nostradamus doesn’t mention France explicitly, but Pau, Nay, Loron are three towns in the southern part of the country. Rearrange these words and you get Napaulon Roy. In French, Roy (spelled Roi) means king, so you’ve Napoleon the King. He certainly swam in praise and perhaps by confluence it could mean how he battled all through Europe. Some people think the mention of Pius relates to Popes Pius VI and Pius VII, who were both imprisoned by Napoleon as is said in the last line.

The prophecies retold and expanded by Nostradamus figured largely in popular culture in the 20th and 21st centuries. As well as being the subject of hundreds of books (both fiction and nonfiction), Nostradamus's life has been depicted in several films and videos, and his life and writings continue to be a subject of media interest. Michel de Nostradame was born in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence in 1503. Though Catholic, he later traded on his Jewish ancestry by saying his natural instinct for prophecy was “inherited from my forebears”.
