Author Guy Bass introduces SCRAP, about one robot who tried to protect the humans on his planet against an army of robots. Now the humans need his... I'm glad I decided to make this one of my API Heritage Month 2022 reads. Can't wait for this to come out so I can get myself a finished copy! Twelve year old Nura works in a mica mine for long hours. She is determined to find a legendary treasure known as ‘The Demon’s Tongue’, and thus provide respite to her widowed mother and four younger siblings from the drudgery of poverty and struggle. However, one day, she gets too carried away while digging and ends up triggering a collapse in the mines, resulting in some of the child labourers, including her best friend Faisal, being declared dead. Nura is determined to save her friend, but in attempting this rescue, she lands up through a portal in the world of the jinn. Is Faisal here? Is the ‘Demon’s Tongue’ here? Can Nura save herself and her friend from the evil jinn? Having read this book I can vouch that the Spirited Away comparison is so apt! Nura and the Immortal Palace is a middle grade fantasy about 12 year old Nura, who works in the mica mines to support her family but when the mine collapses and her friends disappear, she finds herself whisked away into a secret world ruled by the jinn. What follows next is Nura’s race to get herself out of the jinn hotel before it’s too late. As a child, I was blessed with a loving family, a roof over my head, and access to education that could hone my mind. But once I realizednot every kid shared the same privileges, I started to wonder: what wouldan adventure from their perspective look like? That idea is at the heart ofNura and the Immortal Palace – a story about forgotten children, never seenand never represented, never the protagonists of their own stories.

Nura and the Immortal Palace Kid’s Book Review: Nura and the Immortal Palace

A successful juvenile by the beloved New Yorker writer portrays a farm episode with an imaginative twist that makes a poignant, humorous story of a pig, a spider and a little girl. Then a terrible accident in the mine buries her best friend below ground. Desperate to save him, Nura digs too deep and passes over into the magical and terrible world of the jinn. Across a pink sea and under a purple sky, she finds her way to a palace, where great riches and a whole new life are on offer. Nura and the Immortal Palace is said to be inspired by Studio Ghibli’s Spirited Away. Are there other books out there that give you the same vibes as a Studio Ghibli movie?: Share them in the comments! Nura and the Immortal Palace is a stunning middle grade fantasy that takes you on a fantastical adventure, while weaving in some important, real-world issues with the story.

M.T. Khan is a speculative fiction author with a penchant for all things myth, science, and philosophy. She focuses on stories that combine all three, dreaming of evocative worlds and dark possibilities. The standout worldbuilding strikes an impressive balance between realism and fantasy, presenting the harrowing experiences of child labor while also joyfully describing a lavish jinn resort with all manner of curious and memorable details in a way that does not diminish the impact of the former." Nura is exactly the kind of fiercely protective eldest sister main character that I adore soooo much Book Genre: Adventure, Asian Literature, Childrens, Fantasy, Fiction, Literature, Magic, Middle Grade, Mythology, Young AdultThis is magical fantasy with a heart bursting with fury at injustice and with a unrelenting mission to restore hope and champion a better moral code to those who enter the story. Did you know you can flag iffy content? Adjust limits for Violence & Scariness in your kid's entertainment guide. Get started Close The characters were also adorable. Nura was a bit irritating at times, but it was exactly the kind of stubbornness and slight egotism that would be realistic for a 12-year old forced to take on too much responsibility too early, and I loved that she ultimately was driven by love and care for her family and friends. Her best friend Faisal was such a sweetheart too, and their bond was so precious!
