The Guilty is a 2021 American crime thriller film directed and produced by Antoine Fuqua, from a screenplay by Nic Pizzolatto. A remake of the 2018 Danish film of the same name, the film stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Christina Vidal, with the voices of Ethan Hawke, Riley Keough, Eli Goree, Da'Vine Joy Randolph, Paul Dano, and Peter Sarsgaard.

Too soon for fictional active shooters in the United States. Really? Who thought that was a good storyline? Yes, it was in the synopsis. I opened my mind to a possible think tank in the mix. Detective Cal Farrell may be suffering from imposter syndrome, a mental breakdown, a murder, or all three. Many people have been treating Cal as a hero but there are those who are in doubt about his actions six months ago. Lately people that Cal knows have been murdered and displayed in grizzly fashions from trees’ to ditches. Heather, a surviving victim from six months ago, and Cal have developed a friendship but that friendship and Heathers life are in jeopardy when evidence starts point to Cal as the culprit of the series of murders of his acquaintances. Is Cal really a murderer or is he being set up? It tells the story of a Sebastian, an 11 year old boy up on charges of murdering an 8 year old boy. Daniel, his lawyer, relates to the boy when he takes on the case. So the reader also gets the story of Daniel, his life as a foster child and his time with Minnie the foster mother who later adopted him and from whom he ended up estranged. The reason for this is not explained until fairly late in the book but I didn’t think there was any surprise about it. In 'The Guilty One', Detective Cal Farrell has been hailed as a hero ever since he stymied an active shooter but that label never felt right. He remains troubled by his non-recollection of the tragic Very Hot Day. Things get uglier when he spots a body strung immensely high up on a tree during a morning run.

The Guilty is a single-location thriller; outside of a few establishing shots and brief fades into fuzzy imagery, it stays in the call center with Joe. Fuqua got his start in music videos, and it’s easy to imagine a version of this movie from earlier in his career relying heavily on fast cuts, impressionistic lighting, and dramatic angles to juice the limited action. Though there’s a little of that here, Fuqua more often settles down his style in the process of sustaining the material over a 90-minute runtime. As Gyllenhaal becomes more frenzied, the movie uses fewer cuts — some of its tensest climactic scenes play out in extended static shots of the actor’s face. Jasmine and Nicolas are twins who just celebrated their birthday. During the night, tragedy strikes, leaving one twin dead and the other one on the run.

Lisa Ballantyne is becoming one of my go to authors when I am looking for my next read. This is another excellent read and a very enjoyable legal thriller that I couldn’t put down, The story was exciting, and extremely well researched, Ballantynes referencing was excellent and concise. Ballantyne makes deft use of avian imagery to support her characterizations and themes. A few examples. First, soon after young Daniel is taken in by Minnie: “Look!” she said to him, stopping and pointing at the sky. “do you see it?”Emma Tapper, an ex-cop driven to drink by a tragedy she’s devastated she couldn’t prevent, is recruited by defence lawyer Angela Köhler to help with the high profile Moretti case. While her new boss seems more concerned with winning than discovering the truth, Emma begins investigating the circumstances of the murder. Detective Cal Farrell was the responding officer to a mass office shooting, took down the bad guy and became a town hero and a newly promoted detective. The problem is, Cal has no memory of his confronting the shooter. The story switches from the events of the past "really hot day" and present day, where Cal is trying to remember what happened on that really hot day. Cal is presently seeing a counselor and trying to work through his issues including his sense of identity as a newly appointed detective, and being a town hero. As the story switches timelines, we see Cal questioning events and red flags starting to appear, but at the same time we see bodies starting to show up in Alexandria. Next day, Nicolas wakes up to find himself covered in blood and Jasmine dead with her head almost chopped off!
