Description

When shooting objects on the same focal plane, the TTArtisan doesn’t really sharpen its corners up until about f5.6. Focus on my LEICA M9 at f1.4 was surprisingly accurate at all distances, and the infinity stop was perfectly calibrated. The Zeiss Loxia 50mm 2.0 was the first manual focus 50mm lens for E-mount cameras. In some areas it shows a better performance, but I find it a bit overpriced these days. If you want to spend that much money on a manual focus 50mm f/2.0 lens better have a look at the Voigtländer 50mm 2.0 Apo-Lanthar E. The performance here reminds me a lot of the 7Artisans 28mm 1.4, which is good news. infinity (24mp Leica M10)

So let me write a little bit about the TTartisan 50mm f/1.2 on it own terms, listing its strengths and weaknesses. Then I’ll leave the comparisons out of the equation for now. Build and feelTo be fair I’d probably use it as a niche lens. Leveraging it more for the shallow DoF and bokeh anyways. That said if it’s sharp around f8 then it might be suitable for landscapes etc.

Cons– Noticeable field curvature, chromatic aberrations on out-of-focus high contrast edges, vignetting wide open, noticeable distortion, only 100-degree focus throw.Technicals are pretty good with this lens and it’s performing better than expected for an f1.2 that is this compact. A 50mm f/2.0 will not break any records in terms of bokeh, but we already saw this lens shows low optical vignetting and doesn’t use aspherical elements, so I hope to see some even and undistracting bokeh. The TTArtisan 50mm 1.4 is not one of those. Performance on the Leica M10 and Sony A7rII is very similar, so again from f/4.0 onwards you get very even across frame performance. The screw-on lens cap makes it much more time-consuming to grab the camera and take a shot. So I didn't like that. The lens measures 2.4 x 2.4" / 62 x 60 mm with an aperture range of f/1.2 -16 and weighs 11.8 oz. / 336 g, takes 52mm filters, and has 10 diaphragm blades.

So far most of the TTArtisan E-mount lenses have first been released as M-mount lenses and then later been modified for other mounts. This 50mm 2.0 is different though, as it isn’t even available for M-mount and the casing design also differs a lot from their M-mount lenses. Like the M-mount lenses it is also made by DJ-Optical though. All these filters are just as sharp and take the same pictures, the difference is how much abuse they'll take and stay clean and stay in one piece. Precise, smooth focussing with zero play — just like a real LEICA lens and even smoother than the stiff focus of the LEICA SUMMILUX-M 50mm f/1.4 ASPH!

At about 4 meters (12 feet) and closer this lens has a reasonably flat field, however at longer distances the field of best focus curves-in a bit towards the sides so that things a bit closer are in better focus at the sides. A fast aperture 50mm lens like this is ideal for portrait photography in particular, because it works out to an effective 75mm on the crop factor A6400. The lens is also made for the crop factor cameras and comes in a variety of mounts which I cover in the video below. Key Features: The TTArtisan 50mm 2.0 is a lens I didn’t even think was possible. At home I have a shelve with some old (mostly broken) analogue cameras and among those is a Nikon FE with a Series E 50mm 1.8 lens. I sometimes look at that lens thinking “for SLR cameras such small yet fast 50mm lenses were possible, too bad this isn’t the case for mirrorless cameras anymore because of the missing mirror box”. If this 1,200×900 pixel crop is about 12" (30cm) wide on your screen, the complete image would print at 35×52" (0.9×1.3 meters) at this same magnification.
