About this deal

Having a tongue-tie can make it difficult for your child to say certain sounds, but it won't have an impact on their overall language development ( read more about the differences between speech and language here). To explain it simply, speech involves what happens in the mouth, and a tongue-tie can affect speech. However, language development takes place in the brain and is not influenced by a tongue-tie.

As always, I hope this article will help you build better communication skills in toddlers . If you notice your child struggling and these strategies aren’t helping, I would love to help you determine your child’s individual needs. Please reach out to set up a free consultation. We are here to support you as you help your child blossom!Teaching children to clap out words into individualsyllables can really help their speech but is also really useful for spelling too. Healthcare professionals specializing in oral and maxillofacial surgery, otolaryngology (ENT), or dentistry are the ones who perform the procedure. There are two primary methods: frenotomy and frenuloplasty. Frenotomy is the most common and least invasive method, typically done on infants or young children using sterile scissors or specialized lasers to release the tight frenulum. Frenuloplasty is a more involved procedure performed on older children, adolescents, or adults, involving a small incision to release the frenulum. The actual procedure is brief, but the appointment may take longer. It's essential to consult with a healthcare professional to determine the appropriate method and ensure the safety and well-being of your child. Tongue-tie restrictions have so many variables to them. Some adults have visible, tight tongue ties, did just fine feeding as infants, and never needed speech therapy in their school-aged years. Some adults have seemingly minor tongue ties and experience things like mouth breathing, headaches, poor posture, and sleep apnea because of them. When it comes to your child’s development, tongue-tie isn’t a guarantee of anything. But, we know that’s not a super-satisfying answer! So since the ways tongue-tie affects speech and development aren’t super clear, let’s start with what we do know. Inferior - mucosa of the floor of the oral cavity, sublingual salivary glands, posterior wall of oropharynx

Ask the students to put their fingers on their throat and feel when the 'engine' is switched on/off. The tongue is one of those structures derived from the pharyngeal apparatus. Towards the end of the fourth gestational week, the mesenchyme of the ventromedial aspect of the first pharyngeal arches begins to proliferate in the floor of the primitive pharynx to form the median lingual swelling (tuberculum impar). This triangular protuberance is located cranial to the foramen cecum (opening of the thyroglossal duct) and is later joined by the two distal tongue buds ( lateral lingual swellings). The lateral lingual swellings are oval enlargements arising on either side of the median lingual swelling. The rate of growth of the lateral lingual swellings exceeds that of the median lingual swelling. Mr Tongue is very busy. He puts on the dishwasher /sh, sh, sh/. He chops wood for the fire /ch, ch, ch/. He walks his dog /h, h, h/. When he finishes his work, he boils the kettle to make himself a cup of tea /s, s, s/.The door at the front of his mouth can open and close /p, p, p/. When it is windy, the door might bang shut /b, b, b/. Finally, the inferior longitudinal muscles travel above the ventral submucosa of the tongue. These fibers travel between hyoglossus and genioglossus as it arises from the base of the tongue and body of the hyoid bone. The fibers end in the apex of the tongue; allowing the muscle to pull the tip of the tongue inferiorly and also shortening the organ. The marginal lymph vessels will carry lymph to the submandibular nodes or to the jugulo -omohyoid nodes. It is not uncommon to see lymph vessels decussating to drain to contralateral lymph nodes. The vessels from the central region may go to the deep cervical nodes, with a particular preference for the jugulo-omohyoid or jugulodigastric nodes. The dorsal group of vessels also pass laterally on either side to eventually join the marginal vessels in their course to the jugulo-omohyoid and jugulodigastric vessels. Innervation Don’t try all these exercises in one sitting. Do 5 minutes of these exercises in each sitting. Sneak them in during playtime or even dinner time.
