Wax shrinks when it hardens, so just as with the first candle, you'll need to keep filling the hole in the bottom until there is not longer a hole left when the candle has hardened completely. Nowadays, it is done with a small, powerful light that you can shine against and through the eggshell. If you have had problems with bad hatches in the past, candling can sometimes help to see what goes wrong and give you some ideas to try to fix the problem for subsequent hatches as well. To candle properly, you will need your candler and a dark room. The darker, the better. It will help you see the egg contents.

I filled the egg candle into an old jam jar with some dry moss. It looks cute but also clean and Scandinavian. I like my decoration to match the rest of my interior decor and not be too overwhelming. Due to the jar it will be protected of wind and can be used outside as well. You could also add some pastel colored pebbles or sand. You could also dye the eggs beforehand to get different colored results. The possibilities are endless! A thin ring around the inside of the egg indicates an early death. We show you how to make candles using eggshells as molds in this tutorial. After a week of incubation, you can be reasonably precise about the viability of the embryo. At 14 days, you can remove any eggs with embryos that have died and lessen the risk of a rotten egg exploding. I will also explain some of the mysteries behind candling and help you get proficient at this skill, which is extremely useful for incubating and hatching.

This can save you a lot of time and a little money too. I have provided examples of using an 800-lumen flashlight on white, brown, and blue eggs below. Here Is A Blue Egg Being Candled With 800 Lumen Flashlight There are four distinct periods of incubation when embryos can die, and I provide common reasons for these losses in my incubation troubleshooting guide. Perhaps one of the most important pieces of information is the size of the air cell. We have talked about this briefly in other articles, so that we will expand a little here. Egg candlers can be mains powered or battery operated. They tend to come in two varieties: The first is like a torch with a rubber seal around the end, and the second is a table-top unit with a place to sit the egg. Roll a funnel out of paper and place into the top hole of the egg. Make the hole bigger if you have to.Candling an egg allows you to see in a limited way what’s going on inside an egg at particular points along the way to full development.
