When I eventually returned to my desk at Keele University School of Psychology I wondered why it was that people swear in response to pain. Was it a coping mechanism, an outlet for frustration, or what? I did some literature searching to find out what psychologists thought of the link between swearing and pain. To my surprise I could not find anything written on this topic, although there were some papers on the psychology of swearing more generally. Professor Timothy Jay of Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts in the States, whom I have since had the pleasure of meeting, has forged a career investigating why people swear and has written several books on the topic. His main thesis is that swearing is not, as is often argued, a sign of low intelligence and inarticulateness, but rather that swearing is emotional language. In his words: ‘Curse words do things to sentences that noncurse words cannot do’ (Jay, 1999, p.137). Indeed, Professor Jay is rather scathing at psycholinguists’ tendency to have largely ignored swearing. He says: ‘Linguistic definitions of language [that omit cursing] are ultimately invalid, although polite’ (Jay, 1999, p.11). A lyric about betrayal– This Red Button lyric is clearly about Kanye (again), but it also rings true to those who have also felt betrayed by a close one. Ye…Drizzy’s definitely got it in for you… Swear On This Life reminded me a lot of Colleen Hoover writings who, as you know, I am a big fan of. I loved that it was an easy, fast read and I didn’t have to think too much. I was able to just read and enjoy and guys, I haven’t been feeling like this for a very long time. I loved the relationship between these two main characters. They were great together as friends, but as lovers they were simply wonderful. I loved the way they cared for each other and the way they supported each other no matter what. Their bond was fantastically written and so unbreakable. As the story progresses you can feel how strong the connection between them is and how much they still love each other. I can’t explain to you how reading Em and Jase’s past affected me. It broke my heart and moved me to tears so many times. Their story was heartbreakingly beautiful and reminded me that when you have someone who truly loves you the way they loved each other, you really do have it all.

I received an early copy of this book mysteriously in the mail. I read it in one sitting. Okay, two. I have a small bladder. A lyric about love – Drizzy’s lyrics are as smooth as butter. This one is powerful enough to win over any ex. Use it as you please, cupids! The media reaction to our research was unbelievable. When the first paper was published in late July 2009 my phone rang off its hook as journalists from all over the world sought to arrange interviews: with Evan Davis on The Today Programme, with Arthur Smith for The One Show and with Stephen Fry and Brian Blessed for Stephen Fry’s Planet Word. You know life is what we make it, and a chance is like a picture, it'd be nice if you just take it." Renee Carlino truly outdid herself. I've read every book she's written and this one is my favorite. In fact, it's also one of the best books I've read this year! It's captivating and intriguing, utterly addictive, and filled with the emotional intensity that comes with a heart-wrenchingly powerful love that's been given a second chance. I absolutely loved it!!Every morning she would greet me with a smile and every afternoon, just before closing the doors and pulling away, she’d say, “Get on home, kids, and eat your veggies,” as if our parents could afford such luxuries. Her life was exactly the same, day in and day out, but she still put a smile on and did her job well. A lyric about winning: A paradoxical verse where Drake once again boasts and brags about himself. Drake says he’s not the “best” at what he does, but he’ll come out the winner regardless of the competition. A lyric about insulting someone– More funny Drake lyrics, this one has a cool play on words. If you plan on “forcing shots,” think about this line and give it your all. Emiline is destroyed as she realizes that the story she's reading is her own story. Her own STORY of a past she so desperately wants to forget with a boy she loved so very dearly. Jase was her first love, her first everything, her entire world. He was the one who got her through her most horrific days. And she hasn't heard from him in many, many years. Yet, here he is, the J. Colby, writing her story without her permission.

A lyric about haters – Drake admits that he has a “cold” side and can be ruthless at times (although it’s rare). Because of this trait, he feels like people are out to get him. If you feel the same, here’s a lyric to use. Swear On This Life is so much more than just a boy-meets-girl story or a friends-next-door-romance … it’s a complicated and unbelievably strong tale about life and everything it can throw at you (the good, the bad and the downright ugly). The way in which Carlino throws so much at the reader emotionally is kind of astounding. Here is a novel that should feel overly angst ridden and somewhat ‘other’ to many people, but she has managed to capture the basic essence of life through our universal emotions and has nailed the most astounding book of possibly the entirety of 2016. One that is sure to have you weeping alongside the characters and championing their future. A lyric about ambition: One of the best lines from Honestly, Nevermind, this bar by Drake is enough to give you all the motivation you need towards reaching your goal. Hey, it might even get you to the kitchen stove…A lyric about friends/family – Drake is big on loyalty. He’ll always help his loved ones rise, and never let them down. When anyone runs their mouth about him? His squad will take them down. Shut up, you stupid, stupid girl. You’re just like your stupid mother.” He shook his head with such disappointment and disgust. “Get to bed.”
