The Institute, which is part of the UNESCO Mata Atlântica biosphere reserve, also has an educational vocation, raising awareness about the environment. These are all objectives of UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere ( MAB) programme – which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2021, and with which Salgado is actively involved. As in Paris and Rome, the exhibition will be accompanied by a one-off live concert inspired by the themes explored in the exhibition, performed by the Britten Sinfonia at the Barbican on 14 October. This talk took place earlier this year as part of Photo London’s Book Club live events, to coincide with the UK launch of Salgado’s ‘Amazônia’ book published by TASCHEN. The problems of Amazônia are well known and urgent: fires, deforestation, intrusive agriculture, roadbuilding. But Salgado – who with his wife, Lélia, has turned the family farm in Aimorés into a nature reserve that’s a model of reforestation – shows there is still much to fight for. The modern world, for all its rapacity, has only destroyed “a little bit of the periphery. The heart is there yet. To show this pristine place, I photograph Amazônia alive, not the dead Amazônia.”

Although the tribes do some farming, they largely rely on hunting, fishing and gathering fruit, just like their hunter-gatherer forebears. Some of Salgado’s most startling shots show proud hunters carrying dead monkeys home to eat. Yet, he points out, they live in rhythm with nature. When a village gets too big for its ecosystem, it voluntarily splits and part of the community moves to fresh forest. Salgado admires, even envies, the balance their lifestyle allows. “There’s fish in the rivers, animals in the forest, fruit in the trees. They live so well. They have so much time to discuss, to sing, to have parties.” L’unico modo per poter cogliere le reali dimensioni della foresta è osservandola dallo spazio. In the final section of the exhibition visitors will also discover how the Salgados are working to protect the “other Brazilian rainforest”, the Mata Atlantica (Atlantic Forest) through the work of Instituto Terra. It is a chance to see many of Salgado’s greatest hits, among them a striking shot of a mud-covered worker bent over in exhaustion while hauling a heavy load up out of the Serra Pelada goldmine; two members of the Mixe Indigenous community in the Mexican state of Oaxaca, arms outstretched while gazing out into the clouds as though they are about to fly off; and refugees from the 1983-85 Ethiopian famine huddled around a massive tree trunk while godlike rays of sunlight penetrate down diagonally around them.
