Denton, Martin, ed. (2006). Playing With Canons. The New York Theatre Experience, Inc. ISBN 978-0967023489. One thing that stands out is that all but everyone in the book is a white male. With such a big cast, that seems like a hell of an oversight for a book made in 2005. Is Batman: The Man Who Laughs Worth Reading? It’s not revolutionary. It neither redefines the character nor tells a story of earth-shattering importance. What it does is tell an exciting, effective story about Batman’s first encounter with the Joker. Geokinesis: The Darkest Knight's laugh was described as a terrible sound that shook the entire Earth. [16]

Telekinesis: Bruce is capable of manipulating the movement of objects and people with his mind. [16] He was able to control multiple fragments of the Source Wall to imprison Perpetua. [13] In late 17th-century England, a homeless boy named Gwynplaine rescues an infant girl during a snowstorm, her mother having frozen to death. They meet an itinerant carnival vendor who calls himself Ursus, and his pet wolf, Homo (whose name is a pun on the Latin saying " Homo homini lupus"). Gwynplaine's mouth has been mutilated into a perpetual grin; Ursus is initially horrified, then moved to pity, and he takes them in. 15 years later, Gwynplaine has grown into a strong young man, attractive except for his distorted visage. The girl, now named Dea, is blind, and has grown into a beautiful and innocent young woman. By touching his face, Dea concludes that Gwynplaine is perpetually happy. They fall in love. Ursus and his surrogate children earn a meagre living in the fairs of southern England. Gwynplaine keeps the lower half of his face concealed. In each town, Gwynplaine gives a stage performance in which the crowds are provoked to laughter when Gwynplaine reveals his grotesque face. These efforts coincide with a new broadcast from the Joker, promising the murder of industrialist Jay Wilde. As fresh panic sweeps Gotham, Gordon and Batman redouble their precautions, especially once Batman deduces that Claridge had been preemptively exposed to a special delayed-action poison. Though no such thing is found in Wilde, a tight cordon is nevertheless thrown around his country estate - a cordon that the Joker promptly crashes with a stolen helicopter at midnight. The Long Halloween re-established a few aspects of the Batman mythos for modern readers upon its release in 1996. For starters, Harvey’s transformation into Two-Face is front-and-center in the most dramatic accounts of the story. In fact, director Christopher Nolan used a few elements of this storyline when crafting The Dark Knight including James Gordon, Harvey Dent, and Batman’s collusion to bring down the mob as well as the mob’s retaliation against Dent. The Batman Who Laughs appears as an outfit in the shooter game Fortnite while also having a first appearance at the end of the sixth issue of the Batman/Fortnite Zero Point comic, and has an important role in the sequel to the comics Batman/Fortnite Foundation.

Dark Nights: Metal (Volume 1): This storyline details Bruce's first appearance in the "light" Multiverse as well as his time with the Dark Knights. It also displays his first meeting with the Batman of the main DC universe. Subsequently, Batman finds traces of the Joker's passing in an abandoned surveyor's office, and concludes that the Joker is using the office's sewer maps to traverse the city without being seen. However, investigating the sewers produces no further clues; forced to wait for the Joker's next move, Batman resumes work on the antidote while ruminating on his foe's psyche and true motives. Halbur, Petra (4 November 2014). "The Man Who Laughs: The Movie That Inspired Batman's Joker (Sort of) Turns 86". The Mary Sue. The following day, Batman disguises himself as a reporter to investigate the main connection between Claridge and Wilde: Ace Chemical Processing, which the pair had founded many years ago. From the staff, he learns that the plant's wastewater - a long-condemned source of pollution for nearby rivers - can disfigure human skin to look chalk-white, and hair to look green. As a result, he begins to suspect the Joker is none other than the Red Hood, who had dove into one of the plant's disposal tanks to escape Batman's pursuit several months ago. The Batman Who Laughs #1: This issue details the origin of the Batman Who Laughs, as well as how he joined the Dark Knights.

Claridge's murder is soon compounded with even worse news: while the police - and Batman - had kept watch over the penthouse, the Joker had invaded a psychiatric hospital many miles away, killed most of the staff, and armed the most dangerous inmates with heavy weaponry. Batman is forced to spend the rest of the night chasing these rampaging inmates, recapturing only a fraction of them; on exhausting all his leads, he retires to the Batcave to engineer an antidote to the Joker's poison. Superhuman Strength: Bruce possesses immense levels of superhuman strength. During his battle with Perpetua, he was capable of hurling entire planets at her. [18] Having realized that the Batman Who Laughs could only anticipate every move Bruce Wayne would realistically do, the Batman of this world did something he would otherwise never do - team up with the Joker to save the day. In the final confrontation, Batman escaped his evil counterpart and rescued the Over-Monitor, while the cave they were in collapsed on the Batman Who Laughs and the Joker.

LaPointe, Sarah (7 December 2018). "Dark Knight's Mettle: 15 Things That Make The Batman Who Laughs the Best (and Worst) Batman". Comic Book Resources. Quebec, Ontario, Canada: Valnet, Inc . Retrieved 26 March 2019. This plays out during the conclusion of the story. Batman could end it all there and then by dropping Joker into the poisoned reservoir, but reassures himself that “I can’t.” Reprieved, the Joker threatens to kill the residents of Gotham some other time, to which Batman responds “no, you won’t.” Still, fans new and old can celebrate the Blue Beetle outside the movie theater with countless stories, TV series, and even a fighting video game from the makers of Mortal Kombat. That's right, you can blast a hole through your DC opponents as Blue Beetle in Injustice 2. Jaime Reyes is still a fairly recent incarnation of the superhero. However, the Blue Beetle has a long history that includes two previous owners of the mysterious Scarab who also fought for justice. You just have to know where to look for the best stories out there, and DT is here to help you with that endeavor. Captain James Gordon and other officers are investigating a building filled with disfigured corpses; they have chalk-white skin, green hair, red lips, and rictus grins. Batman appears and pledges to find the killer. Nigh-Omnipotence: The Batman Who Laughs acquired the powers of Doctor Manhattan, due to his brain being transplanted into the corpse of a Bruce Wayne who had said powers. This transformed him into a quantum being of nearly unlimited power. [13] After absorbing the energy from every Crisis in history, The Batman Who Laughs became more powerful than ever. [17] His power was such that reality shook in response of his Nigh-Omnipotence, the possibilities of Hypertime to burn out and the last denizens of the Sphere of Gods to shudder at his power. [18]
