Zinc pyrithione: An active ingredient with anti-fungal, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.It helps banish dandruff by reducing yeast production on the scalp, and preventing fungal overgrowth. Sensitive scalps or those sharing shampoos with younger family members may be pleased to know that zinc pyrithione is much gentler, and is less likely to cause problems when used regularly. Usually, it’s not a cause for concern, but too much can lead to an overgrowth of Malassezia that irritates the scalp, resulting in a build-up of dead skin cells that clump together into dandruff flakes. You may think the best way to combat this is by washing your hair more frequently, but that’s where you’re wrong!

Ingredients

Coal tar: With anti-fungal properties, coal tar kills some of the malassezia,reducing scalp irritation for less redness and itchiness. Do note that coal tar shampoo can temporarily discolour blond, gray, or coloured hair, but this staining should wash out after you wash with another product a few times. However, products that use micronised coal tar rarely stain the hair.

Apple Cider Vinegar: A kitchen staple, known for being a home remedy for many ailments, but in terms of dandruff, it can help regulate the natural pH of the scalp and prevent yeast buildup. Tea tree and rosemary oil: Both are magical essential oils that boast natural antiseptic and anti-microbial properties, which help to reduce excess oil and fungus. Coconut oil: A fantastic option for dry scalps or to use alongside drying active ingredients, as it's incredibly hydrating and provides the skin and hair with a protective barrier. Salicylic acid and sulphur: Salicylic acid is an exfoliant that breaks down and removes dead skin cells from the scalp, whereas sulphur is an anti-fungal agent. Salicylic acid helps sulphur to penetrate deeper into the layers of the skin for better efficacy. Though they are very powerful, they can be mildly irritating for sensitive scalps, so make sure to follow up with other hydrating ingredients or products. There are many reasons why we experience dandruff. In short, the main culprit is usually your hair washing routine – that is, either over-washing or not washing it enough! Our hair becomes greasy when there is an excess amount of oil and sebum, which is secreted from the hair follicles onto the scalp.
