Description

A new regulation has been added (411.3.4) and obliges that additional protection by an RCD is provided for all final AC circuits which supply luminaires into a domestic premise. Jocelyn Golding, Electrician Programme Manager at Schneider Electric, takes a brief look at five important amendments to the 18 th Edition Wiring Regulations.

A note has been added clarifying that where non-metallic pipes, e.g. plastic, enter the building and are then connected to metallic pipes within the building, the metallic pipes within the building do not normally require protective bonding as they are unlikely to be extraneous-conductive-parts. Reference to insulating sections has been removed. Supply the local authority with a copy of this report within 7 days of receiving a request for a copy. Consumer Protection: The 18th Edition Wiring Regulations prioritise the safety and protection of consumers. They provide guidelines for electrical installations in residential, commercial, and industrial settings, ensuring that consumers are safeguarded against electrical hazards. Compliance with the regulations offers peace of mind to consumers and protects them from substandard and unsafe electrical work. A: Yes, there are no formal entry requirements for our 18th Edition online course and as such, it is suitable for those who may be new to the industry as well as those in the industry who need to update their qualifications. Upon successful completion of the C&G exam, you will receive a C&G 2382-22 certificate for the 18th Edition. It is important when you complete the enrolment process. You use the name you would like displayed on your certificate. This information will be used when registering you with City & Guilds.Tables and charts containing information relevant to other sections of the book Our 18th Edition Online Course includes the following:

Landlords must obtain a report (usually an Electrical Installation Condition Report or EICR) from the person conducting the inspection and test which explains its outcomes and any investigative or remedial work required. Regulation 544.1.1 concerning main protective bonding conductors has also been revised. Chapter 55 - Other equipment

Legal/BBC Requirements

The JIB and ECS recognise the following qualification for cardholders to show they are up to date on the 18th Edition of the Wiring Regulations (BS7671: 2018): Level 3 Award in the Requirements for Electrical Installations BS7671:2018, which is offered by City and Guilds (2382-18), EAL (603/3298/0), Logic Certification (7671REI18) and BPEC (603/3430/7) .

Yes, the course and our question bank have been updated to reflect the changes in BS 7671 and the new brown book. The new City & Guilds 2382-22 examination is the examination that candidates will be enrolled on. Electrical installation work carried out in a domestic property (such as for a program like DIY SOS for example) is under the scope of Part P of the Building Regulations in England and Wales. Such work should either be carried out by using a Part P registered contractor (listed at https://www.competentperson.co.uk/) orit can be completed by a non-registered person but the work must be notified to the Building Inspector at the Local Authority concerned, prior to the work starting. Electrical work in Scotland or Northern Ireland is subject to different requirements (see links to IET guidance). The 18th Edition is an in-depth document which goes into detail about many regulations. Nobody expects a person to know it word for word! Although, it is key to know the full contents and be able to apply regulations to certain areas of work, referencing correctly. The wiring regulations have been regularly updated ever since to reflect both new developments in wiring and updated modes of best practice. They remained the responsibility of the Society who later became known as the Institute of Electrical Engineers. They now tend to be referred to by their acronym, the IET. Over the years, regulatory standards across nations and continents have become increasingly aligned. This began in 1981 when the regulations aligned with those of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). In 1992, the British Standards Institute ( BSI) formalised the wiring standards under BS 7671. More recently, the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization has harmonised wiring regulations further. Under the Health & Safety at Work Act section 17, you could be prosecuted for non-compliance with the BS 7671 regulations. It is widely accepted that compliance with the regulations and associated requirements will also ensure you comply with the 1989 Electricity at Work Regulations.
