It’s when you shoot the Silver Pigeon that it comes into its own. The balance was around the hinge pin, giving the gun a wonderful neutral handling and made the gun feel relatively light when mounted. Pigeons for Sport:

Habitat: The wild pigeon is found in coastal areas and the feral pigeon is found almost exclusively in areas of human habitation. The Steelium Optimabore HP barrels are built on the familiar monobloc principle, and use Beretta’s Optima system with extended forcing cones to reduce recoil, and chromium-plated bores to ensure longevity. In total 4 times conquering the English Channel and the Irish Sea from France into Ireland.The last two flights producing velocities of less than 900 ypm. A truly great thoroughbred. Since early history, the pigeon has lived alongside man and been exploited by man for food, sport and as a messenger, courtesy of the birds’ unique ability to return to its nest and its mate from huge distances. The feral pigeon is now one of the most successful and resourceful species on the planet and is found in virtually every part of the globe with the exception of the Sahara Desert and the two Polar ice caps. The bird has adapted to survive in extreme weather conditions and in temperatures ranging from -50° to +50°, yet it has still managed to proliferate. The pigeon is one of the most intelligent species on the planet and able to undertake tasks that were previously thought to be the sole preserve of humans and primates. The pigeon can pass the ‘mirror test’ (being able to recognise its own reflection in a mirror) and can even recognise all 26 letters of the alphabet, and man has exploited this intelligence and these abilities for thousands of years. The pigeon has served man faithfully and often heroically throughout. However, in the 21st century the pigeon has at last outlived its usefulness and is slaughtered by the millions for commercial gain, often illegally, without a thought to the debt of gratitude that is owed to the bird. I tried this gun on 21g loads, and it cycled them flawlessly. A thing to note is that most of the mechanical wearing surfaces on the gun are easily replaced to ensure long service.

David Van Aalst (Australia); wins the 1st King Moora 215 km against 2,242 p. with a 9 minute lead. The 1st prize winner is a descendant of Gold Dust. Dovecote, Dieppe, France Pigeons were housed and bred within these structures for food, their excrement (which was used as fertiliser and as an ingredient for gunpowder), sport and as messengers. The tradition of housing pigeons in man-made structures continued until the 20th century and is described in more detail in the Dovecotes article. Young pigeons: GPSOL is given with drinking water in a dose of 15 ml per 1 litre of water at least 1 day a week.

2023 Race Results

Distribution: Worldwide except Sahara Desert, Antarctica and the high Arctic. European population estimated at between 17 and 28 million birds. It swung through targets with grace and ease with its 30in barrels. The comb was slightly higher than on my Field I, which is what you’d expect on a Sporter over a field gun. In fact, the fit of the Silver Pigeon V was perfect for me. And this is one of the many reasons it’s such a popular gun; it fits just about everyone. This enables the shooter to make the most of their ability. The beavertail fore-end filled my hand nicely and offered good control of the gun. Pigeons have strong muscles which are used to help in flying. Depending on their flying ability and range, their muscular abilities vary. For me, the Silver Pigeon and Browning’s 525 are the Ford Mondeo of the shooting world. They are unpretentious, have great handling, are well made, affordable and do the job. They also come in different levels of finish, so the Silver Pigeon V would be the equivalent of a Titanium version of the Mondeo.
