There were 6 Tests in all this, from which he got 118 runs at a reasonable 29.50 as well as 20 catches. Smith handled the group efficiently, making sure the stars, some of whom were way superior to him in stature, were handled properly. It was not an easy ask. It is not clear whether being an amateur was a hindrance to this, but it certainly did not make things easier for him, more so given that a sizeable population of the men he had to lead were professionals. While we don't know MJK Smith birth time, but we do know his mother gave birth to his on a Friday. People who are born on a Friday are social, have self-confidence, and and a generous personality. They have a flair for beauty, elegance, romance, affection and refinement. The six motions on which members had been asked for their votes were all carried by an overwhelming majority of the 97 members who had sent in valid voting papers.

After quitting from his TCCB post Smith became an ICC match-referee, officiating in 9 Tests and 13 ODIs. It was the worst economic downturn in the history of the industrialized world. Despite the Great Depression, Hollywood and popular film production flourished. Radio was the main source of entertainment, information, and political propaganda, and jazz, blues, gospel, and folk music, became immensely popular. Discover what happened on this day.Alan ‘AC’ Smith, donning those gauntlets behind stumps, had a brief discussion with Dennis Amiss before taking the pads off. Amiss took up the place behind stumps. Smith took the ball and sent down a maiden with his odd-looking action where he bowled off the wrong foot (think Mike Procter and Sohail Tanvir from later days). At the other end Ibadulla conceded 6. The score read 28 without loss. EW Swanton analysed his methods as: “Smith, though outwardly unconventional and in manner casual to a degree, succeeds as a captain for the conventional reasons. He is thoughtful for his players, unselfish, does not fuss them or panic, shows a grasp of the situation which they deem generally sensible, and not least gives an inspiring personal lead in the field.” p20, Ian Wooldridge, What have we here? For the rest of the 1954 season he played for his native Leicestershire without making any particular impact. In the 1955 season at Oxford he got away to a bad start, but made runs later and strengthened his reputation as a batsman of considerable application by scoring another century in the University match. He again assisted Leicestershire at the end of the University term. It was, in fact, in South Africa in 1960 that Smith played one of his most remarkable innings, batting for a Commonwealth side, raised and managed by that great pioneer, Ron Roberts, against Natal. I remember Norman O'Neill talking about the innings soon afterwards and saying how it had shown him an entirely new range of leg-side strokes, from the chip into the open spaces to the lap, played with extraordinary certainty from far outside the off stump. Mike made 204 that Durban day, the highest of his 68 hundreds, and you may be sure that any off spinners or slow orthodox left-armers who had bowled at him went home scratching their heads.Hughes also highlights in his book a couple of pre-final warning signs for both himself and his county. Whereas Hughes had eagerly anticipated each of his previous finals with both a mixture of excitement and the required amount of nerves to perform to a high standard, he admitted that for the first time he did not feel the same sense of occasion as he had before, that he was maybe too relaxed. Perhaps Hughes was guilty of taking a final appearance for granted, after all Middlesex had played in plenty, but the fact that the county had booked a reception after the final for the very first time, also suggests that complacency had set in. There is no formula to be a successful captain. It depends largely on two factors: Your resources - that is, your players, and the particular conditions - the pitch and the weather. The captain has to utilise the resources and conditions as well as he can. Hughes is right; who among us would not have loved the chance to have played in a Lord's final watched by millions, regardless of the outcome? It may have ruined Middlesex's reception at the Regent's Park Hilton, it may have left Hughes numb, but you can't deny that the drama provided by both teams, and that final over especially, takes its place neatly alongside other famous moments which make the history of the NatWest Trophy so rich. We hope that we will be able to hold the AGM as a normal ‘in-person’ gathering – in which case it will be at Derbyshire CCC, as usual.

We are seeking members’ thoughts on what the ACS might do to mark the 250th anniversary, in June 2022, of the match regarded as the first-ever ‘great’ or first-class match. The Broadhalfpenny Down Association is already making plans to mark this occasion: should the ACS join in with them, and/or should we mark this anniversary in some other way? Thanks to Chris Overson and Simon Sweetman who are researching our daily bulletins from a century ago. A Virtual Members Meeting was held via Zoom on 26 November, to discuss forthcoming meetings (including the 2023 AGM in March, and plans to celebrate the ACS’s 50th anniversary with a lunch at Grace Road in October); social media developments; and recent and forthcoming publications. Further details here. A recording is now available via YouTube. 22 November 2022Then they took up the baton – but what a baton! Could they have achieved what they achieved without the foundation built by Lloyd and Bob Cottam? Almost certainly not. Dermot Reeve 1993-1996 I made my first-class debut for Leicestershire, the county of my birth, in 1951, immediately after leaving school. But I had played just three games when I was called up for compulsory military service. It is more apparent now that it was at the time that the selectors got rid of him too soon, partly perhaps because he was too independent for their liking. He did things his own way, whatever the establishment may have thought of it, although as harmonious a partnership of captain and manager I have toured with was when Smith and David Clark were paired together in India in 1963/64.

Indeed, after Middlesex had strolled to the semis with easy wins over Durham, Nottinghamshire and Sussex, it was the bowlers who ensured that the defending champions would be at Lord's on September 2, by successfully defending a determined run-chase against Hampshire in Southampton. The role of Middlesex's death bowler had been allocated to Hughes for a number of years, his effort in the 1986 Benson and Hedges cup final seeing Middlesex home against Kent, and although it was Fraser in the Hampshire match who held his nerve in the final over, Hughes details in his excellent A Lot of Hard Yakka book, that he secretly joked to friends before the match that he would probably bowl the last over in the final with just 10 runs needed for victory.Having retired from the First Class game in 1975, he became Club Chairman between 1991 and 2003, and was an ICC match referee between 1991 and 1996. Ruling Planet: MJK Smith has a ruling planet of Moon and has a ruling planet of Moon and by astrological associations Sunday is ruled by moon. The Moon represents one's nurturing and emotional instinct. People who are born with Moon as the ruling planet are sensitive, nurturing, and usually have fluctuating moods.
