About this deal

Another important consideration, embedded within this story is the amount of time spent visualizing the future.

A large government agency did an internal reorganisation which meant departments got cut up differently. Staff were understandably concerned, so we ran Make Your Boat Go Faster with them. With every decision or opportunity, every member of the team asked themselves: WILL IT MAKE THE BOAT GO FASTER? The Everyday Layer—What you do daily to deliver your control layer. This is, essentially, what the athlete does in training and daily life, meaning that there is a clear link between Tuesday’s training session and the athlete qualifying for the national championships final next August.Olympians split goals into four layers: the crazy layer , the concrete laye r, the control layer and the everyday layer .

I raced Doran, the Romanian stroke, countless times… He must have thought I was there to make up the numbers, because I’d never beaten him… I wanted to beat them so badly, to settle the score, to make sure that they finally woke up and took notice of me.” Did you know that most of the popular TV shows and movies are based on books? So why not indulge in the original form of entertainment by immersing yourself in reading. Most importantly, it’s free with your Markham Public Library card. When you give yourself time to really think about what you want to see happen, you start to get lots of insights into how to make it happen. Ben Hunt-Davies is a former British rower turned author and performance expert. He won an Olympic gold medal at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, as part of the first British rowing team to do so since 1912.

It’s worth taking everyone towards some of those taboo conversations about the way you work together, the conversations you never have as a group, because whilst all focus is on work, and not on individuals, it’s hard for them to be engaged. Additionally, to maximize collaboration, team members should have a deep understanding of each other's strengths, weaknesses, and habits. This knowledge enables effective communication and allows team members to support one another, optimizing their collective performance. The Path to Success: Embracing Process-Oriented Thinking and Resilience Malcolm Gladwell, in his ground-breaking workOutliers: The Story of Success, discovered that people who were considered experts or genius in their work, put in 10,000 hours to earn the title, so start slogging! To become a grandmaster seems to take about 10 years (only the legendary Bobby Fisher got to that elite level in less than that: it took him nine years.) And what’s 10 years? Well, it’s about how long it takes to put in 10,000 hours of hard practice. Ten thousand hours is the magic number of greatness. In 'Will It Make the Boat Go Faster?'you can see Ben and his colleagues were committed to this level of practice. Every so often, a sports analogy appears in a celebrated business book. This is because sports are great for analogies. Having just returned from the Chef de Mission Seminar in Nanjing, China, Sarah shares her insight into the preparation for the games as leader of the GB team, in line with the three Performance Principles that she champions at Will It Make The Boat Go Faster?

Role models—Who else has achieved what you want to? Are they that different than you? When I was doing bobsleigh, I was terrified of my first run down; what if we crashed? But I looked at everyone else—athletes from other countries—and decided, if they could do it, so could I. Train like a champion -No matter how talented an athlete is, they train to perfect their skills and maintain peak levels of performance. Continuing to dream is part of this, they never stop striving for that next big performance. Planning to compete at the highest level, and putting in a shift, high-performance athletes plan out their training schedules in advance to make sure they reach specific performance goals. Ben’s routine was the epitome of focus, using the process of training and racing to hit a peak performance when it mattered most. Olympians, the epitome of achievement in sports, excel not only because of their talent and dedication but also due to their skillful goal-setting approach. They divide their goals into four layers, each playing a crucial role in their journey to success. Be prepared to experiment -One of the most interesting sporting interviews I’ve seen was with Australian swimmer, Ian Thorpe, explaining how swimmers use ballet in their training programmes. The logic was that ballet dancers train to reproduce very specific athletic movements perfectly, time after time, and this skill is also important in swimming, where getting the body, arms or hands slightly out of position can cost hundredths of a second. It will require me as the leader to empower each individual on the team to be well informed and be confident to know when it is appropriate to make a decision and when something needs escalating to me. In the run up to the games which take place on16th-28th August, I will be bringing the Team Leaders of each sport together at least three times between now and when we meet to board the plane. The first meeting is on the 10th April 2014, when we will be sharing what we’ve learned in Nanjing and hearing how the Team Leaders feel their experience, skills and knowledge can be best used. I am looking forward to leading Team GB!

Combine 1) being thoughtful and deliberate about your future with 2) the use of implantation intentions to get there — and you’re bound for success. If you want to be a winner, set your goals right and set them from the start! And never forget that whether you’re going for a gold medal or for an employer of the month award, that it’s a marathon and not a sprint. So, split your goals into smaller chunks.

It’s not necessary to spend every waking moment in the future. That actually stops you from living out the process of getting there. But with every decision, you’re reminded of the future you want. By reading books about protagonists who have overcome challenges, we are oftentimes encouraged to do the same. The right book can motivate you to never give up and stay positive, regardless of whether it’s a romance novel or a self-help book.Level 1: They talk about systems and processes, ie not having enough manpower, poor communication with leadership, poor data etc. Nowadays, it’s all about winning. Life is a competition and you’re nobody if you don’t win once in a while. Now, who would you rather have educating you how to win: a regular teacher or an Olympic gold medalist? Have a great work ethic but work smart -Ben talks about how he had missed weekends, holidays, families, parties etc. because of his training schedule. To achieve great results, we generally have to work hard. Most business people I know certainly do. The real lesson, I believe, is to work smart. In showing vulnerability, it also invited vulnerability, and they all started talking about some of their fears and anxieties, which helped the team get over some difficult issues, and bond together more strongly. The new department head was fully accepted in the role and everyone pulled together. Will It Make the Boat Go Faster” is a book written by one. Bonus: he won the gold medal by being part of a rowing team.
