Description

When it comes to installing a gas hob in your kitchen, you can undertake much of the work yourself. However, you can not actually connect the gas hob to a gas supply unless you are fully registered with proper certification. A gas pressure test needs to be carried out to ensure that the gas supply is working correctly. If your hob fails the gas pressure test, it will be a clear indication that you are probably dealing with a potentially lethal gas leak.

Drop the hob down onto the sealing strips and tighten the clips. It’s now time to call the gas fitter; you can find a local fitter here. The advice I would give is that, yeah do gas installation, but only if you can read and understand specs and test requirements, as this is how you will gain competency, its not enough to ask your local plumbers merchant, they aren't gonna get you out of the s**t if you stuff up. As somewone who specs major engineering projects every day, I'm fairly confident, all I can say is rtfm if you are not sure and do lots of research before you try anything whether that is gas, electrical or mechanical. If you really aren't sure after rtfm, don't even attempt it matey, you will be putting yourself and others at risk.

Gas Alarms & Sensors

You can fit a gas hob yourself, and it is a very satisfying job, if you take the time to do it right. You are not allowed to connect the hob to the gas unless you are Gas Safe registered, and it is worth engaging with your chosen engineer before you start so that you are familiar all the rules. I would point you all to the http://www.ukcopperboard.co.uk/ a very useful resource for information. You will obviously need a nearby gas supply to feed your hob. Ideally, a gas supply should be situated no further than 150 centimetres away from the hob itself. A gas hob should only require a 13A fused spur feed. However, consult the guidance provided with your gas hob model to ensure you are fully aware of the gas supply requirements.

Whilst not wanting to sound like an expert, I have done a fair amount of plumbing work including servicing and reinstalling a boiler in my house as well as re doing the water feeds in the house so I am capable of achieving good results and doing the job to the proper standard. Drill a 25mm hole inside the cut out area (more than one can be drilled if it makes life easier for you) and use a jig saw to cut out the hole required for the hob.

And although failure to observe the code is not in its self an offence it will be used in any criminal proceedings. If there are no instructions the usual size of the hole is 25mm less (all round) than the actual size of the hob.

I have seen some real cobbled up jobs that really haven't made me happy, even one connection that leaked and they had to call out a different plumber to fix the problem, and so I wish to obtain the views of other people preferably people who do this particular job a lot. I can go down the route of cobbling something up in the same manner but there must be particular fittings available. There is no official standard size hob, and the number of rings can vary from 2 to 5 typically with will further affect the overall size of the hob.I agree with paddyalans research into installing his HOB. Researching this job has resulted in it being installed competently. Don’t assume that just because the gas hob or the connection hose is brand new that it can’t possibly leak. Defects can occur during manufacture and also things can get damaged during storage and transport.

Ventilation: While you’re keeping a safe distance from any fire risks, make sure that the room you’re in is also ventilated. Should a gas leak occur before or after installation, it is better to place the gas appliance where there is a window or door nearby. With this in mind, there are also guidelines when it comes to positioning your hob: When the hole is made its time to fit some clips to hold the gas hob in place. These clips should come with your hob. A very common size is 600mm wide by 500mm deep. The size of the hole you will need to cut into your worktop will be smaller than the overall hob size. Nothing should be fitted in this “Hot Zone”. This includes any plugs, kitchen units or anything else that could burn or melt. Not so obviously, you will almost certainly need to have an electricity supply for your gas appliance. This also should be within 1.5m of your planned location.

Gas Supplies

It must be noted here that although a DIY enthusiast, or even a carpenter is allowed to fit a gas hob into a worktop or base unit, they are not allowed to connect it to the gas. Please see our project on gas safety and DIY installations.
