Description

A wonderfully told story following 4 generations of Welsh women, with complex characters, complicated relationships and a glorious and beautiful ending. Elin, Becca’s mother is a headteacher, organised and knows what is best for everyone; her husband, her daughter and even her grandmother. Were their circumstances the reasons for their mistakes or is it just their different personalities?

The reader learns the history of this family, and the hurt and pain that has been caused in the past.

The conflicts and emotions are real and raw and you’ll find yourself relating to so many arguments and points of tension. It is a joy-filled, life-affirming, sob-inducing novel - with characters you'll come to know and love - from no. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this, but I didn't find myself gripped like I did with her others.

The time she looses her cool is with her academic mum which she is the opposite like the rest of the family it seems. P'haps because I'm Welsh myself I can identify with her characters and the use of certain colloquialisms. It's a great read, refreshingly free of stereotypes, as we follow events in the lives of the four women in the run-up to Grace's ninetieth birthday.Ruth Jones, you smashed this book, this was my first book I’ve read by Ruth, I’ll be going back to read the rest. Grace is fast approaching her 90th birthday; the only thing on her mind is a reunion with Alys, the daughter she hasn’t seen for 30 years. The plot is mostly set in the present, although there are a few moments where we flash back to different stages in the past 70 years. Noticed another reviewer mentioned she disliked the way RJ often leaves the endings off words, ie, "nothin" instead of "nothing and "somethin", not "something".

Also I loved that it is set in Wales, with such familiar and comforting use of the Welsh language and idioms, so reminiscent of my own upbringing. Ruth's second novel, Us Three, was an instant Sunday Times bestseller in hardback and paperback and has sold almost a quarter of a million copies.I cried and I laughed and now there’s a hole in my life where Grace and her dysfunctional family used to be. But Grace is close to the end of her life, and she knows she has no choice but to try to heal her family. Ruth Jones is best known for her outstanding and award-winning television writing, most notably BBC One’s Gavin and Stacey, which she co-wrote with James Corden and in which she played the incorrigible Nessa Jenkins.
