The definitive version is the current (2021) MOFI vinyl release which is very good but not quite reference quality. By reissuing back catalogues with the promise of perfect sound for ever, they could persuade fans to shell out all over again for albums they already owned. It was a long while before the constant gigging, traveling, and recording reaped any financial reward. This leg took the band to several European countries, where they met journalists and performed on television programmes.

The band's sound was characterized by Mark Knopfler's intricate guitar solos and storytelling lyrics. Obviously, the ultimate goal was to ensure the newly mixed tracks sounded like they were from the same place and time as the originals, so the reverbs, outboard effects, and ambience mic levels (often there were four pairs of audience mics) were critical.I have a mental list of groups to make my way through and after so many years, i finally reached Dire Straits. The history of the band, of course, extends beyond my first involvement in 1984, so I was thrilled to have been asked to oversee it as the executive producer.

The uncluttered production by 'Muff' Winwood allows Knopfler's melodic guitar and laid-back vocals to cut through clearly. There is not a weak track on the album - Knopfler had clearly penned an impressive collection of songs during his pre-fame years. I have an older stereo system that was meant to play records and this is a wonderful sounding record. It came off the back of their hugely success 1985 long player Brotehrs in Arms and featured plenty of tracks from that record as well as the four others before that.We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others. People recognise the band for their later hits and albums, but I will stand my ground and say that the bands debut album is the best in their catalogue. Indeed, for the album ‘Brothers in Arms,’ we were one of the first bands to use the sparkling new DASH digital system on the Sony 3324, 24-track machine, with 24 tracks on half-inch tape. There were also instances where some mics weren’t even recorded, as in the case of ‘Sultans Of Swing’ 1992, where one of the drum overheads was mysteriously absent on every night.
