I don't need it in every book, but now and then I really enjoy plenty of magic being flung around and interspersed in the world! When Billy can’t find the informant, he wonders if Kate is secretly harboring her, since the two grew close during Kate's weeks undercover. Style: I really enjoyed Nelson’s writing style, it was simple, yet conveyed necessary information and description.

The author gives us nothing from the viewpoint of the Enemy, which adds to their ominous reputation and leaves a lot of open questions. But with an unknown adversary laying waste to the Empire and magic growing ever more unreliable, things could get interesting. At times as well, sometimes the writing can be straightforward and more telling than completely describing the setting.

These problems were relatively minor, however, and really didn't impair my overall enjoyment of the book. Adrian and Kara are fighting like children when the gates of Avalon open, and Emily succumbs to the prophecy. A mage clan torn apart Carina Lin escaped from captivity and freed her brothers and sisters, but she's been recaptured. Each character in the novel has a unique voice, style, almost aura, that brings the setting to life.
