I prefer the IGN - the French National Geographic or whatever organization - maps are akin to Ordnance Survey Maps in the U. I have trouble reading maps on this scale (Michelin has 500 series individual maps and older 200 series maps I used till the 300 series became available about 10 years ago).
As for campsites these are generally well signposted as you drive into a town, which is easier than following a map.
Couple of years ago I picked up a very good atlas of Spain/Portugal from a Spanish Lidl, far better than the Michelin map. a road map of Europe (1/3 500 000 scale), and indications of danger zones (load limits and pass heights, dangerous routes, etc. div class="col-sm-6 col-md-3" >

Just out of interest, one of the most useful atlasses i still use is a Michelin French Autoroutes atlas which they unfortunately stopped publishing a few years ago.Michelin's route planner as well as the time and distance charts will help you plan and optimise your journey. This glove-box size, compact A5 atlas with lie-flat binding is perfect for travelling across France and the surrounding countries. Philip's Road Atlas France, Belgium and The Netherlands shows the national road networks at a scale of 1:1 million, with ultra-clear, detailed mapping for urban areas.For other countries we have Michelin maps - they're ok but I don't find them as good as the AA France one. The new edition Philip's France and Spain Road Atlas, in a spiral A4 format, is the must-have atlas for anyone travelling to these countries. I find Michelin maps are too detailed for what I want, moved to an AA big easy read map last year and managed a lot better than previous.
Even when they were they were not accurately positioned only as a general guide that a town/village had a campsite. Michelin's checklist will help you prepare your journey before your leave and Michelin's safety alerts will warn you about dangerous driving areas, such as steep hills and level crossing. Very easy to read, toll motorways are clearly marked, motorway service station names are included and you can tell whether they are the quiet aire type or the larger ones with full facilities (if that's important to you).
