Hard to credit it, really, but Thewlis hasn't had a lead role since his Cannes-conquering turn as the poetry-spouting and blisteringly nihilistic Johnny in Mike Leigh's Naked in 1993. Ultimately, according to Christopher Booker of Booker Prize fame, we read stories to believe wrongs can be righted and that there is some purpose and justice in the world. Id never read a Colin Bateman novel before, but on the basis of this wonderful debut I will endeavour to read a few more.

I've always really enjoyed his books, in particular the Mystery Man series but this one didn't do it for me. Divorcing Jack by Colin Bateman - combination fast-paced crime thriller and comic adventure yarn set in bloody Belfast where the narrator is a young journalist by the name of Dan Starkey, a bloke who can fire off one-liners like George Carlin or Eddie Izzard. McKinty also has a mineshaft seam of black humour, and his character Sean Duffy drinks more than seems humanly possible at times, but the Duffy novels have greater depth and reality. They are at least reading copies, complete and in reasonable condition, but usually secondhand; frequently they are superior examples. Faint remainder mark to base; Screenplay published to coincide with release of the movie starring Rachel Griffiths who appears on the back cover as a gun toting nun. When the bodies begin to pile up, Starkey is forced to go on the run with the help of Parker, the US journalist he has been guiding around, and Lee, an extraordinarily capable NHS nurse who pays the bills as a nun strip-o-gram. The performance is stilted and doesn't flow well, which is a shame, because this is a great comic novel.

Samotný příběh je poměrně jednoduchý a přímočarý a – jak to u věcí z Ostrova bývá, zajímavější je obloha než samotný flák děje. Luodit laulavat, ruumiita tulee ja koko kansakunnan tulevaisuutta määrittävät salaisuudet alkavat paljastua - ja miten mahtaakaan käydä päähenkilön jo valmiiksi myrskyiselle avioliitolle? This political background is clarified through the character of visiting Boston Globe journalist Charles Parker (Richard Gant). If you take any of the two aspects of the film – comedic or political – and separate it from the other, maybe it really isn't all that good.

On wife Patricia: "She had done more damage to my nose in three years of marriage than twenty years of amateur football.
