Description

A welcome shift perhaps lies in our hero, Clementine, who celebrates the strong women of traditional tales who had always been there until the Grimms and Perrault shifted the narrative perspective away from them.

Ever since a short visit with my parents as a teenager, I’d remembered the city as a castle on a rock atop a purple ocean.

Five years later at Sofia’s Lycée Français, I devoured Albert Camus’s L’étranger and felt the murderous hammer of the Algerian sun on that beach. From where I stood on the chipped balcony of Block Number 328, the world was a distant rumour, radio static, something that happened in books. Clementine doesn’t feel as though she belongs and when cleaning one day she finds an object which changes her and her determination to find the magic place grows.

This was an utterly charming book and it was so refreshing to read a tale where there were no references to mobile phones, laptops or Xbox games. For further insight check out the upcoming stops on the blog tour, details of which can be found on the tour banner below. Arnold Pan of PopMatters wrote, "Try as you might to explain Julianna Barwick's incomparable, indescribable music, maybe it's best to let The Magic Place do all the talking, because the results speak for themselves". It tells the story of Clementine, a girl whose life consists on living in a dirty cellar, attending to the whims of her ferocious aunt and devious uncle.

A mix between Harry Potter and Matilda it had so much potential but the latter half just let it down. For my stop on the tour, author Chris Wormell has kindly given us a glimpse into his writing process, and, most importantly, an introduction to the friendship between our heroine Clementine and her cat, Gilbert! The debut children’s novel from the illustrator of Philip Pullman’s Book of Dust sequence, The Magic Place is a timeless fable about breaking free from the dark and embracing a bewitching new world of possibility. Though I must say the vivid descriptions were quite expressive even without the pictures to look at.

He has won a number of literary awards including the Bologna Ragazza Prize, a Nestle Smarties Award and a Booktrust Early Years Award.I was far from the concrete balcony of my childhood, but not so far that I felt removed from myself. The cat Gilbert you’ll adore him, the one character that comes and goes and interacts with every character and also helps to make life better for Clementine.
