About this deal

The book features work from across Deller's life and art and includes Sacrilege, the inflatable Stonehenge, the Iggy Pop Life Class , The Battle of Orgreave , a recreation of a confrontation from the Miners' Strike, bats (a subject in at least three of Deller's works), Andy Warhol (whom he met in 1986), rave culture, hen harriers pecking out the eyes of a Tory MP, and a giant Chameleon slide. The book is written in my own words,” he explains, “and the tone I was aiming for is someone sitting in a pub chatting to you about what they’ve been up to.

Oh man do yourself a favour, don’t waste your time reading this review, and instead go onto YT and watch Deller’s excellent “Everybody In The Place” followed by all the rest of his stuff you can get access to. His strategy was to approach people with opposing views to his “in a friendly way, so as to hopefully get into their mind a little bit”. To this end, it is designed, he says, “to look a bit like one of those annuals you’d get for Christmas when you were a kid”. The first monograph in French, Art is Magic explores the cultural references of the celebrated British artist, from Rod Stewart to the Industrial Revolution, linking them to his iconic works.

Today the notion of the architect as the controlling auteur still dominates both the teaching and practising of architecture. What Deller does ranges from the seemingly playful – an inflatable, lifesize, bouncy castle-style model of Stonehenge – to the deadly serious – the mangled shell of a car destroyed by a bomb in a crowded Baghdad market. Deller grew up in London and famously attended the elite private school Dulwich College at the same time as Nigel Farage, who makes a fleeting appearance in Putin’s Happy, revving up a union jack-waving anti-Brexit audience in Parliament Square. Texts by Jeremy Deller; interview with Jeremy Deller by Daniel Scott, Alan Kane, Mary Beard, Jonny Banger, Cheerio. This book is an enjoyable look back across 30 years worth of artworks by Jeremy Deller - from his playful inflatable Stonehenge to his poignant intervention where soldiers in World War I uniforms turned up at stations.I generally have five or six books on the go – at the moment this includes a biography of Keynes, a collection of papers on participation in democracy, the Power of Strangers, Rewilding, the latest Weird Walk journal and, a much appreciated present, the Definitive Desert Island Discs. PLEASE NOTE: Concessionary rates apply to under 21s, full time students, registered unemployed and registered disabled – just show us proof of status. Much of Deller's work is collaborative; it has a strong political aspect, in the subjects dealt with and also the devaluation of artistic ego through the involvement of other people in the creative process. The work was a response to the Murdoch press amplifying conspiracy theories that arsonists played a major role in the devastating Australian wildfires of 2019 and 2020.

Having just rewatched Putin’s Happy, in which he engages with individuals amid the often unruly and threatening throngs of protesters, I’m not sure I agree. Art is Magic is artist Jeremy Deller’s attempt to tie up the key works of his career alongside the art, pop music, film, politics and history that have inspired his work.
