About this deal

As ever, start the series at the beginning with Rivers of London, inexplicably retitled in the US as Midnight Riot.

I’m a Hitchhikers fan from way back but even I was totally over the jokes by the end of the first chapter — and they just kept coming. The bonus interview at the end is fab and I really appreciate the insight, not to mention it’s a fun listen. Rather than sit around, he takes a job with emigre Silicon Valley tech genius Terrence Skinner’s brand new London start up – the Serious Cybernetics Company. This audiobook contains all the signature humour and every-man bluntness we have come to love from Peter Grant, and much more information about the international magical community. Drawn into the orbit of Old Street's famous 'silicon roundabout', Peter thinks it should be a doddle compared to his last job.Which leads us to Ada Lovelace, the Enchantress of Numbers, and the Mary Engine mentioned briefly in a previous book but I’ve forgotten which one, could be a novella, which is why I’m writing everything down this time. False Value opens with Peter Grant, wizard policeman, starting a new job in a company that does geeky stuff involving data and algorithms. I think her name is mentioned once or twice but she isn’t part of this story and for that I’m grateful. I hadn't actually forgotten a whole novel's worth of adventures, for False Value is told in a series of discombobulating flashbacks, identified only by reference to the month at the start of each chapter. Born and raised in London he says that he'll leave his home when they prise his city out of his cold dead fingers. When they mention the NY Public Library and The Librarians I had a flashback to that awesome show The Librarians (anyone?

It's revealed later in the plot that the Mary Engine's purpose is either to create or generate magic and it can open a portal to another, darker dimension. Book 8 in the Rivers of London series, from Sunday Times Number One bestselling author Ben Aaronovitch. Since the SCC originated from the US, Peter asks Reynolds to look into its background and the head of the company (Terrence Skinner).

I love being there more than the real London’NICK FROST’As brilliant and funny as ever’THE SUN’Charming, witty, exciting’THE INDEPENDENT’An incredibly fast-moving magical joyride for grown-ups’THE TIMESDiscover why this incredible series has sold over two million copies around the world. One of the things liked most about this eighth book in the Rivers of London series is the tender relationship between river goddess Beverley and Peter.

Because pheromones, because beauty, because laughter and joy when she was near and loss and emptiness when she was gone.
