I'm actually shocked there hasn't been a post yet from someone claiming to have easily used a 20 pounder when they were in kindergarten or some such nonsense.

Remember, force equals mass times acceleration and continued use of higher mass often leads to forced acceleration (to get the job done and let your muscles rest). Strouty I think 20 is too much, in fact 12 is probably as heavy as I would go nobody swings a really heavy sledge anymore. With a heavy metal head and long wooden arm that enables it to be swung overarm, they can make easy work of breaking concrete. I am looking at getting a couple of sledge hammers, I have been eyeballing the wilton BASH style hammers.Groz Indestructible Handle Hammers meet ANSI specifications "Hand Tools - Heavy Striking Tools Safety Requirements", as well as BS 876 specifications for material, hardness and performance. I preferred the square design over the tapered heads because if you were banging 2x4 stakes in the ground you could use the square head sideways and it wouldn't split the wood so easily as it hit the whole flat surface of the stake.

I guess it performs like brass, yet it could still create a spark, so it is not considered safe for certain environments. The energy argument seems right until I use something heavier and the mass/inertia just seems to take care of the job. Also I find that using sledge hammers with a fiber glass handle to be better in general then wooden handles.Standard Industrial grade Sledge Hammers are suited to all general purpose heavy striking applications. Genuine second growth American Hickory moisture controlled, machine-gauged to precise dimensions for a perfect fit with weather-resistant clear lacquer finish. I owned a 10 pounder when I was a six-two, 275-pound weightlifter, and swinging that thing from over my shoulder for more than ten minutes forced me to take a long break a catch my breath. Being 40 and not quite the shape I was once in, I took a few more breaks than I expected due to the weight of heaving this hammer.

This year I'm clearing an area for a shed, and decided to get something a little bigger to (hopefully) break things up a little faster and with fewer hits.I can't see any place a 20 lb hammer fits into automotive work unless maybe your working on the 200 ton coal mining dump trucks. In fact, I don't see any real evidence of the head deforming either (the head on my 16 pound hammer has noticeably deformed over time). In a professional environment you shouldn't be using a sledge hammer unless you're breaking rocks of course.
