Description

HamRadio 2.0 praised the large display and usability of the Yaesu FT-891, as well as its digital signal processing and filtering capabilities. He criticized the high retail price of the unit, but it’s important to note that the retail cost of this radio has decreased significantly since his initial review. Uncompromising Receiver Circuit Design Ensures Excellent Performance • Triple conversion with a 1st IF frequency of 69.450 MHz (SSB/CW/AM The FT-891 offers up to 100 watts of HF/6m output power with efficient dual internal fans, coupled with Yaesu's legendary receiver design, triple conversation with a 1st IF frequency of 69.450MHz for really outstanding performance. Start the spectrum scope by accessing the Settings Menu, FUNCTION-2, and selecting SCP. Long press the [F] button to exit the Settings Menu, and you should now see the spectrum scope. Remember, this was a snapshot, so if you want to refresh, press the function button below SWP (sweep). To increase or decrease the bandwidth you are viewing, cycle the selections using the SPN (span) button. To increase or decrease the sensitivity of the display, press the LV# (level) button. Play around with this, move up and down the band while viewing the scope and understand what it does. I find that it’s just enough information for me to work in the field. Exit the scope by short pressing the [F] button. Problems with Mouse/Keyboard During Transmit

In good conditions, I suspect there is little difference between the FT–891 and FT–817ND for general listening. The FT–817ND has produced some of my best recordings of Shortwave Radiogram. The newer radio however brings many advanced tools to bear on more difficult signals, while its band scope and full sized VFO tuning dial enable desktop style shortwave exploration.Yaesu's IF DSP provides effective and optimized QRM rejection. 32-bit high-speed floating-point DSP (maximum 3000 MIPS) provides cancellation/reduction (DNR) of the random noise that is so frequently frustrating while on the HF bands. Highly optimized AUTO NOTCH (DNF) automatically eliminates dominant beat tones, and the CONTOUR and the APF are very effective receiver noise reduction tools during HF-band operations. I don't find the menus very annoying, most of them are set and forget anyway so they don't bother me and once familiar with the menus you need it's just fine.

There are additional tests found in the radioaficion link below. It sounds like, if you are wanting to amplify this radio, you may want an amp that makes its power at lower drive, for a cleaner signal. I suspect, however, that most buyers of this radio will not be adding an HF amp. A test with an on-air friend confirmed -- even though they are the same wattage, and the ICOM has a much better quality sound from its microphone, the FT-891 has what he described as, "more punch." That can be useful. I tested various levels of compression and mic gain, on both rigs. In short, the 7300 will almost always get "clean audio" reports, because ICOM forces aggressive ALC on you, but the FT-891 is capable of decent audio also, and a louder perceived signal, if you adjust it right. But, there are trade-offs. Don't be naughty. Follow proper adjustment procedures (you can mess your transmit audio up, if you don't follow the manual).I almost can mimic the receive of my IC751A (comparing here apples and oranges, although a vintage radio, has still its place today and I would say has a soothing receive compared to the nowaday digital fatiguing radios) with both contour and IF shift, it has a nicer less "noisy" receive (although in itself this radio is not as "noisy" as its predecessors).
