The book description reads : " A delicious twist on a Gothic Classic, Rachel Hawkin's "The Wife Upstairs pairs Southern Charm with atmospheric domestic suspense" and DELICIOUS IT IS! it's a surprisingly fun and twisty bit of domestic suspense; there's plenty that stays true to the original, with little references dropped throughout, but jane is a lot more modern, a lot less willing to endure her station in life—coming up in the foster care system has taught her that in this world, you gotta take what you can get and keep moving. I was completely blown away by The Wife Upstairs. This is a compulsive, irresistible retelling of Jane Eyre with a modern, noir twist – and wow, does it work’ Samantha Downing, bestselling author of My Lovely Wife

The Wife Upstairs is a pretty standard mystery-thriller, notable mostly because it’s based on Jane Eyre with a southern twist. It was okay, but I didn’t have strong feelings about it. I think there’s definitely better stuff out there, but if you like Jane Eyre or if you read lots of mystery-thrillers and need new material, you could give this one a go. Ultimately, I think it’s the Jane Eyre fans who also like mysteries that will appreciate this book the most. Full of small town gossip and rich people drama, this story was a cleverly-plotted, modern-interpretation of a classic tale. While I have never read Jane Eyre, after this, I really want to! Jane ends up in the hospital, and the house is now burned down. Jane recalls seeing the fire in the panic room and running away from it while Bea rushed in to save Eddie.Meet Jane. Newly arrived to Birmingham, Alabama, Jane is a broke dog-walker in Thornfield Estates––a gated community full of McMansions, shiny SUVs, and bored housewives. The kind of place where no one will notice if Jane lifts the discarded tchotchkes and jewelry off the side tables of her well-heeled clients. Where no one will think to ask if Jane is her real name. But Mrs. Reed is holding her dog Bear’s leash, making a face at me, this frown of exaggerated sympathy that’s supposed to let me know how bad she feels about sending me out in the rain on this Monday morning. Rain has been pouring down all morning, making my drive from Center Point out here to Mountain Brook a nightmare, soaking the hem of my jeans as I get out of the car in the Reeds’ driveway, making my sneakers squelch on the marble floors of the foyer.

But, can this unlikely romance last, and can Jane really transition from their dogwalker, to "one of the girls" ? When people who have the power to influence starts to lie about themselves in social media and real life, some innocent people will try to emulate them and lands up in terrible depression. She hopes that no one will notice that Jane isn’t her real name. And she hopes that no one will notice their missing valuables. The setting: a southern town in Alabama, Thornfield Estates. A place that is full of mansions, with perfectly manicured lawns and where the women are in shape, wearing too much jewelry and scheduling their next Neighborhood Beautification Committee meeting while alcohol runs freely. The story begins with Jane, who walks dogs in a posh neighborhood, Thornfield Estates, where she meets Eddie Rochester who lost his wife in a tragic accident years ago. They have an engagement after a swift romance and Jane moves into Eddie’s massive mansion. She soon discovers that she is not the only one harboring secrets about the past. Jane gets together with the other women in the neighborhood, and as they are talking, she realizes that the women will not truly accept her unless she is married to Eddie. As such, Jane has a new goal which is to get engaged. She’s hopeful he’ll do it on his own, but when he doesn’t, she gives him a nudge by making him think she is considering leaving to go to grad school. (She wouldn’t since she never even finished college, but he doesn’t know that). It works and he proposes.

Hawkins has said that, “Twisting Jane Eyre’s famous love triangle into a domestic thriller set in the contemporary South is easily the most fun I’ve ever had as a writer,” and the fun she had very clearly shows through. What was great fun for Hawkins to write will also be great fun for readers to read! And I think all the characters are well written and interesting in there own way( except Eddie, dude get your shit together).I loved how deliciously evil and snarky they were and that you really couldn't trust anyone. Then she meets with charming widower Eddie who is Thornfield Estate’s resident, looking like he may see her soul. Eddie’s wife Bea and her best friend Blanche are drowned at an unfortunate accident and their bodies were never found.

Plain but street smart Jane has aged out of the foster care system and is struggling to make it on her own in a small suburb of Birmingham, Alabama. After a brief stint in a coffee shop, she becomes a dog walker in the upscale, gated community of Thornfield Estates. She supplements her income by stealing jewelry and other small items from her clients. One day while walking through the estates, she meets Eddie Rochester, a rich widower, whose wife recently died in a boating accident. Their insta attraction is complicated because Jane is running from her past and Eddie has secrets of his own. My Thoughts:First, I don't know why authors write retellings? Why not be original? And I should never have chosen this one because I love Jane Eyre and this book and it's "Jane" are so far from the heroine in Charlotte Bronte's novel that they shouldn't even be in the same sentence. Comparing this silly book to Jane Eyre is a literary crime. And yes, I KNOW, it's a way to sell books, but if you love JE as many of us do and are considering grabbing this because you're intrigued, I have to believe you'll be as disappointed as I was. Eddie is a recently widowed billionaire from Thornfield Estates who is enigmatic to the core. His wife Bea and her friend died recently in a boating accident, and the police could not recover their bodies yet. When Jane is ebullient and is trying to become a woman of Eddies dreams, the public is also very busy comparing Jane to Eddie's first wife, Bea. I enjoyed the book very much even despite the fact that I mostly knew what was around the corner or, more specifically, what was upstairs. I might have even given it five stars were it not for two key things that earned it only four for me:
