We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others. Since 2001, we've brought you uncompromising, candid takes on the world of film, music, television, video games, theater, and more.

I appreciate that Arrow has taken a page from Criterion’s playbook and started putting booklets in some of their releases — it’s a nice touch that serves as a reminder that once upon a time, the vast majority of thoughts about movies were set down on paper. Suffice it to say that there’s an enormous amount of bonus content found here, with a big batch of new extras that were created for the 2019 release along with a lot of legacy content that was ported over too.RoboCop, from Orion Pictures, marked director Paul Verhoeven's (Flesh + Blood) Hollywood debut and instantly became an enduring sci-fi/action classic when it landed in theaters in the summer of 1987. With its stellar A/V presentation and bounty of extras befitting a film so defined by excess, Arrow’s 4K UHD Blu-ray is sure to be the definitive release of RoboCop for years to come.

Ok, i’m biased - Robocop was one of the first 18/R rated films that I ever saw, and has remained in my personal top 10 all-time favourite movies ever since. Such a theme can’t be laughed off as a trope, as it continues to be a selling point for carny politicians even as the nation’s crime rate drops. It’s hard to think that it’s been 35 years since the future of law enforcement blasted onto Cineworld cinema screens, but to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the sometimes black-humoured movie from director Paul Verhoeven, RoboCop (1987) came back to the big screeing with a 4K director’s cut to celebrate the movie’s release. It's gritty, grimy, and grainy, but boy do several shots look stunning, revealing a level of detail hitherto unseen, pulling in close to the very pores on the skin of the game cast; that healthy grain layer reminding you that whilst DNR must have been applied, it was done so tastefully and tactfully, and without robbing the print of any of its underlying textural minutiae.Heroic cop Alex Murphy (Peter Weller, The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai) is gunned down in the line of duty, only to be resurrected as RoboCop, a cybernetic mix of spare human parts and Motor City steel, and the latest defense against crime designed by the all-powerful OCP Corporation. Going the extra mile, whilst the 4K restoration may have been done a few years back, the additional director's cut footage has been remastered to match up and looks pretty damn good as a result. Given the film’s vintage and its use of special effects of the old school optical variety, the jump to 4K is a double-edged sword: little details are better, resulting in image quality that might even surpass what you could see in the movie theater in 1987, while the softness of the special effects stands out more. Note: We focussed mainly on the Disc 1 Director's Cut in 4K, and with that found some temporary issues which were all resolved with some gentle cleaning of the disc.
