Description

Evocative details and lyrical, moody prose. . . a richly conceived story that blends mythic and Gothic storytelling.” —PW

The following version of this book was used to create the guide: Craig, Erin A. House of Salt and Sorrows. Delacorte Press, 2019. It’s not a secret that I’m complete and utter trash for fairy tale retellings, especially lesser known ones such as The Twelve Dancing Princesses. So when I saw that House of Salt and Sorrows was exactly that… welp, I couldn’t reserve a copy at my library fast enough. For me, the strength of this book was the beautiful imagery. Lavish descriptions of fairytale balls and the beauty of the Salann Islands really set the scene for the horror to come. Some sequences were genuinely disturbing, and I found myself thinking about them a good while afterwards (in a good way - exactly what I want from this type of book!) Gothic romance is full of cliches and stereotypes, and we love it. We love being scared, of the unknown where there is a haunted house and a murder, where you’re not sure what’s real and what’s not. Not everything we read and watch needs to be subversive all of the time. It’s easy to get swept up into the mysteriousness and eerie tragedy that befalls the heroines of gothic romance. It’s a perfect step into escapism and away from real life. But things suddenly change when Verity's sister Mercy sends word that the Duchess of Bloem, Dauphine, married to the celebrated botanist Gerard Bloem, is interested in Verity's unique painting talent, requesting her to draw a portrait of her son Alex, who is in a wheelchair after his tragic childhood accident.Verity is 17-years old and has spent her whole life living at the family estate, Highmoor, now run by her older sister, Camille. The rest of the remaining sisters are all all living in various places around Arcannia. Unfortunately this was just not it. Verity was SO stupid I couldn’t take it. I don’t know why she needed so many times to be presented with evidence before she finally came to grips with what was happening but her naivety was too much. I hated being in her head and she was so childish.

It’s a fairy tale, a young-adult romance (though gothic enough for adult readers) and a whodunit too.” —The Wall Street Journal
