although it was written to Gulliver from Andrew, I loved the chapter titled "Advice for a human" (very poignant). A modern alternative to SparkNotes and CliffsNotes, SuperSummary offers high-quality Study Guides that feature detailed chapter summaries and analysis of major themes, characters, quotes, and essay topics. A moat that makes Audrey different from the echoes: sophisticated, emotionless machines, built to resemble humans and to work for human masters. Cave remains ‘both genuinely repellent’ and ‘oddly sympathetic’, making this ‘a page-turner in the best sense … most of the suspense comes from character’ (Burnside).

The Humans by Matt Haig – review | Fiction | The Guardian

I know that some of you reading this are convinced humans are a myth, but I am here to state that they do actually exist. He hasn’t the slightest clue Martha will disappear into the Shadow Forest – a forest full of one-eyed trolls, deadly Truth Pixies, a shadow-stealing witch and the evil Changemaker. It didn’t at any point become to clichéd in my eyes - instead, it turned into an honest and heart-warming story that I truly appreciated. He told the Financial Times that doing a second degree was a way of “putting off being an adult”; he delayed that step further by moving to Ibiza, where he worked for the party organiser Manumission – he is usually described as a bartender, but says his main job was selling tickets.

That is why so much that is beautiful on this planet has to do with time passing and the Earth turning. Haig displays a wise understanding of the human condition and exploits to the hilt the vantage point that he has given his narrator. And while they are quite valid and something that the author could have rectified easily, each is not much of a problem. Astute, drolly hilarious and occasionally beautiful, full of poignant and painful insight into what it is to be human.

The Comfort Book is a collection of consolations learned in hard times and suggestions for making the bad days better. Terence Cave, owner of Cave Antiques, has already experienced the tragedies of his mother’s suicide and his wife’s murder when his teenage son, Reuben, is killed in a grotesque accident. Cape dropped him when he sent them a novel about vampires living dull suburban lives (it was later published by his new publisher, Canongate, as The Radleys).

It will have you laughing, give you goosebumps, make you gasp, bring a tear to your eye, and warm you from the inside out. I picked this book up because I saw it recommended by a booktuber, and I wasn't expecting that much going into it. As a black hole forms it creates an immense gamma-ray burst, blinding whole galaxies with light and destroying millions of worlds. At first glance no alien race would be able to resist the temptation to exterminate a dangerous, almost rabid, species like ours. This book is full of thought-provoking statements about what it means to be human, and what love is, and human life and death. Granted, the plot is somewhat unrealistic and silly - it is after all about an alien who is put on Earth to complete a mission - but said alien’s observations on humans are spot on and very interesting as well as hilarious.

The Humans: A Novel - Kindle edition by Haig, Matt The Humans: A Novel - Kindle edition by Haig, Matt

The Humans is a funny, compulsively readable novel about alien abduction, mathematics, and that most interesting subject of all: ourselves. Much of the first half of the novel is taken up by his puzzled analyses of primitive human ways: the nightly news, he reckons, should be renamed The War and Money Show; getting drunk is how humans forget they are mortal, while hangovers are how they remember. He warns against the dangers of social media, but has 450,000 followers on Twitter and uses the platform vigorously. The Humans gave him confidence and confirmed his new publisher’s faith in him; Reasons to Stay Alive, which was derived from a blog he wrote in 2014, established him firmly in the public mind as a teller of stories and an open, uninhibited, ego-free chaperone through the maelstrom of life. Until he realizes that the most useful thing to have in his Bettering Tower would be a real life human child. There are a ton of lines like this at the end that made me figuratively gag: To experience beauty on Earth, you needed to experience pain and to know mortality. As Andrew bides his time to find the right moment to eliminate Gulliver and Andrew’s wife, Isobel, he starts to discover comfort on Earth. Yes, it is irreverent at times, and the language is sometimes rather strong, but only to capture character and reflect reality — a reality which the author describes as “magic realism”.
