Despite, or maybe because of, constant turmoil on so many fronts, Celtic Frost achieved an artistic level few others would even have dared to dream of aspiring towards. Replete with iconic cover art by HR Giger, “To Mega Therion” imposes its dark majesty from the off with the orchestral bombast of “Innocence And Wrath”, before launching into the savagery of the hook-laden “The Usurper”. Convinced, Noise asked CELTIC FROST to record a mini-LP, even though that hadn't formed part of Warrior and Ain's concept document. Over the course of little more than three years between 1984 and 1987, CELTIC FROST established themselves as one of the most important bands in extreme and experimental music of that era. A friend gave me a massive stack of NMEs from the mid-80s recently and Fine Young Cannibals seem to appear on the cover more than The Fall, Everything But The Girl or The Smiths, let alone Sonic Youth, My Bloody Valentine or Coil. The rapidfire rate of creativity during this period perhaps reflects that Fischer understood that, in creative terms, once a vein of ore is located, it must be mined with speed and precision before a rockfall obscures it forever. Of course, if you look at the decade dispassionately now with the benefit of hindsight, you can see clearly that the true epitome of modernism in new music was happening in heavy metal, hidden in plain sight. Due to personal difficulties, Martin was not in the band at that point, and so bass duties for the recording were carried out by session player Dominic Steiner. It, and CELTIC FROST‘s previous releases, increasingly received critical acclaim, which emboldened the band to take more risks, to push the boundaries of heavy music even further with their next album.

Only CELTIC FROST could create an album which kicks off with a singular cover of a new wave song ( WALL OF VOODOO's "Mexican Radio") and immediately follow it up with the mournful tragedy of "Mesmerized". One ingrained narrative of the modernist 1980s is that music slumped midway through the decade, with all of the creative verve that powered post punk sedated until acid house culture livened things up once again. The thing that’s most important during these years that stuck in my mind is the camaraderie between us. This decade-long process was, among many other things, one of deracination – almost certainly an unconscious move on the part of its main players, as by the early 80s, most young white metal musicians, when they rejected the blues as an influence, were rejecting music made by white musicians, who had in turn been influenced by white musicians, who had originally been influenced by Black musicians. While the recording quality is top notch with the bass really thumping, it still has that slightly tinny and “recorded live” feel you often get from early releases. A 12" x 12", 40-page book, brings together photography — some previously unseen — from the era and brand new interviews with Tom Gabriel Warrior and Reed St Mark. We have written some of the musical sketches the past few years and we are scheduled to go into the studio in 2023 to record the new album. There’s no denying the Black Sabbath influence (but, hell, what band wasn’t influenced by the Black Country’s favourite sons? Read more about the condition New: An item that is still in its original shrink wrap from the manufacturer and the original manufacturer’s seal (if applicable) has not been removed. Arguably despite being a little off the wall in places, Into The Pandemonium still manages to be very accessible, especially for fans of older rock and roll.

So a lot of these cassettes were either taken by friends of ours, or we were giving them to our crew, or we used them at home to work on the lyrics or guitar solely. Following the usual annual / bi-annual release schedule of bands back in the day, Into The Pandemonium didn’t give the band a huge amount of time to evolve yet they did still manage to tweak things a bit. Number one, we were a small underground band originally, and we never thought that anybody would still talk about this; Hellhammer or Celtic Frost 40 years later, or on a global basis. Songs like “Mezmerised” and “Sorrows of the Moon” pulled in the trippy feel of classic rock and wound them into at-the-time modern metal numbers.
