It’s the tale of Hollywood moving from silent films in the 1920s to those with sound into the 30s, and it does earn the often used “love letter to Hollywood” tag given to films with this sort of industry, inside focus. The making of featurette is actually pretty good and at just over thirty minutes it manages to cover a lot of ground without only being a bunch of crappy EPK talking head segments strung together. Featuring electrifying performances from Diego Calva, Margot Robbie, and Brad Pitt, the film is hilarious and engrossing in fits and starts but running over three hours is an often tedious affair.

While it may be surprising to some that Babylon has received a Steelbook release, collectors of the style will be happy to know that this is a beautiful one.Through the grotesqueries and narrative excess, there is genuine beauty in this film with incredible performances, exquisite cinematography, and another infectious score from Justin Hurwitz.

The score sounds amazing through your home theater speakers with every instrument discernible and even the ringing sounds of percussion hanging on til their very fade into silence. As much as there is that I didn’t enjoy about Babylon there’s so much that’s so great that I know I will be revisiting this film several more times. There are three discs, one on its own hub on the left and two on the right on their own stagged-stacked hubs. The big party sequences are virtually wall-to-wall sonic immersion with an epic war scene proving to be one of the most exciting auditory experiences of the film.

While everyone in the film must deal with change, both Palmer and Zhu face the racial, as well as homophobic side of things. It makes a lot of things larger than life, which is how Hollywood is viewed by those on the outside – and how it’s seen through the eyes of some of the lead characters at the start of the film. Rear and side channels provide excellent ambiance, unique sounds and off screen activity to really resonate and put you in the room for 360 degree experience.

I think marketing might of been a bit poor and critics just not accepting it’s a crazy drug filled chaotic orgy like movie. A tale of overweening ambition and outrageous excess, it traces the rise and fall of several characters during a time of unbridled decadence and depravity in early Hollywood. On the cover we’ve got the film’s main stars in a kaleidoscope-style pattern, which looks gorgeous on the cases solid black background. He currently resides in Canada, where, for reasons stated above, he’s attempting to get closer to John Cusack.
