It has especially been a godsend when I am feeling down — I am able to lose myself so completely in these books that I can forget about myself and my problems for a while. Rowling said of her adolescence, "Hermione [a bookish, know-it-all Harry Potter character] is loosely based on me.
Despite all this, and while Strike’s trying to cope with harassment from his mad ex-girlfriend, Charlotte, his shaky relationship with his long-lost sister and a diagnosis of dementia for his adoptive father, Ted, the duo do have time to do some detecting. Without an obvious murder really driving the plot, it's an interesting story challenge for the series. Mark Sanderson at The Guardian added: "Had he read Galbraith, CS Lewis, the creator of Narnia, might not have said: 'You can never get a cup of tea large enough or a book long enough to suit me. K. Rowling adopted when she began her series of novels about private eye Cormoran Strike and his sidekick Robin Ellacott. I enjoy that Strike bases his decisions in part on whether they will increase the chances of Robin breaking up with her new boyfriend. The mystery of the drowned girl and the goings on of the church, and its activities gave me the creeps and the characters especially Mazu with her tarantula vibes was just evil. Margot had (correctly) begun to suspect Janice had been poisoning Steve Douthwaite and was implicated in the apparent suicide of Douthwaite’s lover, and after examining Janice's son, Margot realised Janice was poisoning him also. As always, Rowling puts a lot of balls in the air, and manages to keep them all flying with admirable virtuosity. He has also established contact with Prudence, another of his numerous half-sisters¹, as well as navigating the complexities of his relationship with his sister Lucy, who also spent time at the Chapman Farm site with Strike as children, before it was used by the UHC. The atmospheric cover image shows Cormoran and Robin standing at the seaside, facing away to look at the ocean - and also giving very little away about what to expect from the plot! When the two partners dig a bit further( there is pun here), some dark and sinister details come up, including a series of unnatural deaths. Was der Geschichte viel an Spannung und Dynamik genommen hat, war die Tatsache, dass der Leser schon ganz früh zu viel über die Sekte, ihre Mechanismen und ihre Philosophie erfährt.
When Billy, a troubled young man, comes to private eye Cormoran Strike's office to ask for his help investigating a crime he thinks he witnessed as a child, Strike is left deeply unsettled. For example, the leader of the cult was driving a silver Mercedes while the believers were given no possessions (or much food either). Das Thema "I-Ching", eine Art chinesisches Orakel, taucht nur rudimentär in der Sekte auf, wie eine Art Accessoires, aber so richtig was angefangen hat Rowling damit nicht. The axe being explained/used is up there with creosote tea as things that need to happen before this book is over.
I knew she had the necessary imagination and writing skills to create a new believable and terrifying religion so I was looking forward to see the results.
