The blade was sharp; there was almost no resistance as it went through the joint, perhaps a slight snap as chopped through bone. Afternote: was just reading the other reviews here and this one from Brian really made me laugh: For those of you that have read this book you will understand why I feel the need for a hug. His prose is taut, his language and sentences so bare that they are almost transparent, letting the reader into the mind and confusion of Kline's character. Plus, after shooting the culprit and helping himself to a briefcase full of cash, he doesn’t really need the money anyhow. But, for the rest of you scaredy-cats, too frightened to crack open the spine, yet still curious to know “What, in God’s holy name, was the moral of the story?

It is always dangerous to read too much of an author's past in their works but I believe I see a lot of conflicts in the author's mind being worked on.The novel is bound to inspire a number of reactions from readers, but I can't see anyone being disappointed by it. The story follows Kline, a brutally dismembered detective forcibly recruited to solve a murder inside the cult.

He refuses in part because of the cloak and dagger nature of the summons, and in part because he has no need of money. No detail in Evenson’s book feels extraneous, to the extent that I was tempted to make a table of all the body parts curt off and find out how they are arranged within the book. There's something so unbelievably creepy and sinister to me about the lopping off of body parts (either against one's will or voluntarily). Una Hermandad donde para alcanzar la divinidad y acercarse a su Dios, promulga entre sus adeptos la amputación de sus miembros 🔪🩸💪🏻😵.

Finally, I want to give a shout out to Maciek and his spectacular review without which I never would have picked up this book, and that would have been my great loss. If, on the other stump, you're still feeling the warm glow of your own twisted curiosity, than, by all means, proceed to Item 3. When the tale begins, Kline is minus a hand courtesy of a gentleman with a meat cleaver on his last undercover job. I devoured it in one sitting while waiting for car repairs, wondering how the rest of the patrons weren't shaken up by the events within.
