The lens is exposed and there’s no lid to cover it and prevent damage during transport. That’s a huge issue in terms of durability and this practically forces you to buy a case to avoid damaging the lens. Given the not-exactly-low price, some kind of protection would have been well accepted. The Max has a version of Android software that isn’t too different from what you see on mobile devices. I’m not a big fan of this kind of software because if you don’t have to take a very deep dive into its app store before you run into occasional problems.

Electrical power is made up of Energy per electron multiplied by number of electrons per second. These are expressed in Volts (Energy per unit) and Current / Amps (quantity). It can be charged off of a regular power bank through USB-C. We recommend using the Anker charger but it works fine with other USB-C power banks. So what are the differences between these two products? For the most part, as Anker-manufactured projectors, they share features and specs such as the fact that they’re both DLP projectors with the same brightness (200 ANSI lumens) and resolution (1280 x 720 at 16:9 aspect ratio). They even feature the same 1 x 8W (270°) speaker and 1-second autofocus. In those terms, they’re practically the same unit. A 100-inch screen projected out of a device that’s shaped like a beer can? It’s hard not to fall in love. Though in an ideal world battery life, projected brightness and resolution would be stronger, they’re minor quibbles against what’s achieved here. For a truly portable, and effortlessly useable portable projector, it’s hard to recommend anything other than the Anker Nebula Capsule II.

Picture & Sound Quality

Thanks to these advancements in technology, portable projectors are increasingly popular and reaching lower price points which further help their popularity. Let’s see then how the midrange Capsule Max (the manufacturer’s top product, actually) performs. Because it uses DLP tech, it offers radiant viewing on the 200-ANSI-lumen range at 720p HD. This makes it capable of producing clear images in low-light theater environments. Instant Clarity: Get an ultra-sharp, rectangular image from almost any angle with Capsule Max mini projector’s keystoning in and one second autofocus technology

If a “dumb” electronics port needs a given Voltage, it simply will not work with a significantly lesser voltage, it’s like asking water to flow uphill. You won’t get a picture from a 4K input and there is no HDR for the Nebula Capsule II either, but even though 720p is its maximum output resolution, it can still handle a Full HD signal. Note I haven’t mentioned adjusting the focus of the projector? That’s because you don’t need to, it has a brilliant system to automatically focus and perform keystone correction (where the projector is at an angle to the projection surface). There’s a reason it is a fraction of the cost, it isn’t doing anything. You wasted your money with that cable. Supported video formats include H.264, H.265, VP8, VP9 and DivX 4x/5x/6x, with video decoding up to 1080p at 60 fps. Audio decoding includes MPEG-4 AAC, MPEG-4 HE-AAC, MPEG-4 HE, AACv2, AAC ELD, AMR-NB, AMR-WB, FLAC, MP3, MIDI, Vorbis, PCM/WAVE and Opus. This explains why when I tried playing an MKV of Koyaanisqatsi I ripped off the DVD (yeah, that’s legal in Italy as long as you own the original!) the Capsule Max wouldn’t play the audio despite it being standard AC3. There seem to be a few formats that are not recognised by the device and that require installing different player apps, though one has to resort to manual installation as the Play Store is not present.

Having Android TV software is one of the main reasons the Nebula Capsule II is a better projector than the Max. You can tap into just about every major streaming service— whether it’s Hulu, fuboTV, YouTube TV or Disney+. When looking at the Nebula Capsule Max you wouldn’t say that it is a projector: it looks more like a fancy Bluetooth speaker. In fact it is a 150 × 80 mm (it is compact!) aluminium and plastic can with holes all around the lateral surface and controls on top. Design isn’t anything special, yet its simplicity makes it kinda attractive. It is built reasonably well, with no apparent flaws. The 737 g weight is also low enough for it to be portable without issues. One thing that’s important to point out: you can watch Netflix on the Capsule II. But it takes a bit of work. Anker says that due to Netflix’s policies, the company only certifies devices with at least 1 million units in production. Nebula has built this projector to be one of convenience, so it will automatically adjust keystone and focus when you put it down. If it’s not quite right, you can hold down a button on the remote to redo the process, or just move the projector slightly. The Capsule Max’s remote is light; it’s made of a hard plastic that’s pretty solid. The buttons have a rubberized finish.

Nebula Capsule Max review: wherever cinema

Although the Nebula Capsule Max offers a “speaker mode”, which allows one to use it as a speaker, it offers limited audio quality: bass is neither powerful nor very deep and there’s definitely a “boxy” ring to it. Voices have decent enough timbre and there’s good clarity even in action films. Using an external speaker, even a small and portable one such as the SoundCore Flare+ or the Creative iRoar Go, delivers much better results than using the embedded one. That’s absolutely understandable though, and the Capsule Max is indeed decent for watching films. In the end it’s quite a good setup which will be supported for many years, as Android 8.1 won’t be EOL’d for at least four years, so it should continue to be compatible with app updates. Picture & Sound Quality There’s a battery onboard for that true portable projector experience, which lasts 2.5 hours at low brightness – just don’t expect much more than half that at full brightness. Nebula says the Capsule Max and Capsule II can project up to 100 inches. I use a 120 inch OWLENZ screen . And both the Max and Capsule II filled out the screen without sacrificing picture quality. Nebula’s Capsule Max vs Capsule II: The Differences These are all fair trade-offs, but on the darker mode it means that you really need a darker room to watch in or you have to put up with a smaller picture. This would be like passing a waterfall through a narrower gap below so the water in the narrower gap was force to move faster. While it’s a notable failure on the music front, this presentation isn’t such a bad compromise for film. The scale and texture of the audio in the opening of The Martian works well. The simple score swells and shrinks with the drama, the midrange is good enough to convey the emotion and some texture to dialogue and there’s just about enough precision for the Capsule to portray the grit of the sandstorm. We can hear individual particles hitting the metal of the Mars Ascent Vehicle (MAV), and that’s good enough not to detract from the entertainment. It’s a little bright but passable. The res is only 480 but is superb for my van which is why I bought it and I have a 40” drop down screen.
