Description

The Queen's Wake is a narrative poem by James Hogg, first published in 1813. It consists of an Introduction, three Nights, and a Conclusion, totalling over five thousand lines, and there are also authorial notes. The poem presents the contributions, in various metres, of a series of Scottish bards to a competition organised by Mary, Queen of Scots on her arrival in Scotland from France in 1561. According to the official accident report, the first officer repeatedly moved the rudder from fully left to fully right. This caused increasing sideslip angles. The resulting hazardous sideslip angle led to extremely high aerodynamic loads that separated the vertical stabilizer. If the first officer had stopped moving the rudder at any time before the vertical stabilizer failed, the aircraft would have leveled out on its own, and the accident would have been avoided. [27] The aircraft performance study indicated that when the vertical stabilizer finally detached, the aerodynamic loads caused by the first officer's actions produced 203,000 pounds-force (900 kilonewtons) of force on the rudder, meaning that the vertical stabilizer did not fail until far in excess of the 100,000lbf (440kN) of force defined by the design envelope. [28] [29] The vertical stabilizer's structural performance was determined to be consistent with design specifications and exceeded certification requirements. [30] The procession will arrive at St George's Chapel for a committal service due to start at 4pm. The service, conducted by the Dean of Windsor David Conner, will feature traditions symbolising the end of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign.

The crash was witnessed by hundreds of people, 349 of whom gave accounts of what they saw to the NTSB. About half (52%) reported a fire or explosion before the plane hit the ground. Others stated that they saw a wing detach from the aircraft, when in fact it was the vertical stabilizer. [19] [25] On her arrival in Scotland, Mary, Queen of Scots summons the nation's bards to a competition at Christmas [1813: at Easter].The eleventh bard, from Lomond, sings 'The Spectre's Cradle-Song' and 'Macgregor', the latter telling of the eponymous warrior's abduction by a mysterious fatal woman. There are many fascinating volumes on the shelves of Bromley House, but one in particular has caught my attention in the Neville Hoskins Room. It is a first edition (1813) of James Hogg’s The Queen’s Wake, and is one of the books listed in the original catalogue of the library. Its subsequent publishing history is rather interesting and makes our edition of the poem particularly important.

During the state funeral – to be conducted by the Dean of Westminster – the prime minster, Liz Truss, and Patricia Scotland, as the secretary general of the Commonwealth, will read lessons, while the archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, will preach the sermon. The speakers along the Mall boom into action, asking those with large flags on poles not to wave them. Another huge cheer goes up, followed by laughter. She was the face of reason, you always think things are going to be alright if she says it’s alright.” He said: “We gather from across the nation, from the Commonwealth and from the nations of the world to mourn our loss, to remember her long life of selfless service and ensure confidence to commit her to the mercy of God, our maker and Redeemer. Many continued to wait patiently overnight after the queue closed after 10:30pm on Sunday, with hundreds seen leaving this morning.

When is the Queen's funeral?

At 7.30pm a private burial service will be conducted by the dean of Windsor, attended by the King and members of the royal family. The Queen is to be buried with her husband, the Duke of Edinburgh, at the King George VI memorial chapel. In 'The Witch of Fife', the eighth bard, from Leven, sings of an old man who follows his wife and other witches to Carlisle to drink the bishop's wine. [In 1813 he is burnt alive, in 1819 rescued by his wife.] King Charles and other royal family members who are walking in the procession will join it at 3.40pm at the quadrangle on the north side as it passes into Engine Court. Charles has been heir to the throne since he was three years old and automatically became King when the Queen died. But he was officially announced as King at the First Proclamation on Saturday September 10. He was given the title King Charles III at aceremony at St James’s Palace, but it will be a number of months before his official coronationtakes place. After hours of nervous shuffling around the Abbey as the final preparations were made for one of the most historic events to ever happen within, silence filled the streets outside at 10:43am. It was fleeting and two minutes later, music from a band of pipes and drums marked the beginning of the coffin’s procession from Westminster Hall.
