Description

In the story “Hags,” a demon, which feeds on the shame of humans, experiences overlays of a victim’s memory whilst indulging in their undignified thoughts and feelings: “A child standing alone in a city park at dusk, droplets of blood dried into a pair of jeans, a pitch-dark room with the sensation of small, soft hands finding their way into a sleeping back.

It is impossible not to sympathise with this violent, shame-sucking demon as it longs to tell its human friends who it really is: “I couldn’t burden them with this, could I? It tells two stories side by side (quite literally, as there are two columns of text on the page) and both stories are different experiences of the same environment. This is a collection of horror stories that spans multiple styles and genres, inspired by mythology, folk horror, and modern popular culture. The little details make the stories more encompassing and really add to the eerie theme of the collection. Probably shouldn’t have been reading this at 1:30am now I don’t wanna sleep hahaha full review to come!It is such a fresh and playful approach to storytelling that you cannot help but be totally enamoured with Craig's abilities. An Oxford historian, in bitter competition with the rest of her faculty members, discovers an ancient tome whose sinister contents might solve her problems. In one segment, “The Camera,” the friendship between Stan and Gary, both in their 20s, is strained when Gary begins taking photos of Stan without him knowing. By turns unsettling, funny and fiercely intelligent, Parallel Hells is a queer carnival of monsters and masks. All of the stories play on surrealism and I love that they are influenced by folklore and other gothic literature.

Raw pork and opium has one of the more interesting styles of writing explored however the context of the story leaves you going. As the cast develops, new characters appear in the peripheries of each other’s narratives, but are blurred and distorted. Varied and fast-paced these short stories contain lots of strange and terrifying situations and characters.
